YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY

On Monday, I talked about what a great book Out of Sight is, and Keris agreed, but she also said she preferred the film. (Controversial!... but then it does star George Clooney).

So many books, especially our favourite chick-lit ones, are made into movies that we even devote a weekly Trashionista feature to them: Friday Flick.

But I want to know how you feel about film adaptations. The upcoming release (next Friday, 5th October, with selected previews this weekend) of the hotly-awaited The Devil Wears Prada makes this a timely debate: can the film ever really be as good as the book, or is something always lost in translation?

Tell us: from book to film- is it a Yay or a Nay (if you HAD to choose!) and why? And we want to know what you think the best and worst adaptations are... go on, let rip!

YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY - Comments

  • The only reason I preferred the film version of Out of Sight was that scene in the boot/trunk of the car ... wow.

I can&#39t believe you haven&#39t read Chocolat, Diane and Shanna! It&#39s a gorgeous book (I also can&#39t believe Johnny Depp does nothing for you, Shanna!).

Um. What was the question again? Oh yes, books into films. Like Diane said, there&#39s a lot more in a novel (a good novel, that is) than would ever fit in a two hour film so as long as you go with low expectations they&#39re fine. And if they make people buy the book afterwards that&#39s good too.

I loved "The Devil Wears Prada!" Even dragged dh to it and he enjoyed it!

The First Wives Club wasn&#39t too bad, not quite the same as the book, but close.

  • Oh, Breakfast at Tiffany&#39s was another I liked better than the book. In part, it was because the book was really just a long short story, so the movie had more stuff in it rather than having stuff cut out. And in part because I&#39m a bit of a romantic, and I liked the more hopeful plot that involved a love story much better than having the nameless narrator who was probably gay and the depressing ending.

I didn&#39t know Chocolat was a book. Must add to reading list. I went to that movie with a purse full of Dove Promises because I knew I&#39d be needing them, and I was right. All that lovely chocolate ... Johnny Depp was in that movie? ;-) (actually, he does very little for me)

  • ah that&#39s interesting Camilla- I quite liked Runaway Jury because I hated the novel and found it sanctimonious- gun manufacturers were a more interesting target I thought...

STILL haven&#39t read Chocolat *hangs head in shame* so I really liked the film, although it induced severe cravings (for chocolate, not Johnny Depp LOL!) xxx

  • I have a feeling Devil Wears Prada is going to be much better as a film.

I really didn&#39t like Grisham&#39s Runaway Jury. It changed it so much that it became pointless but I guess they couldn&#39t make a film slamming tobacco, could they?

Similar for Joanne Harris&#39 Chocolat. A beautiful flim but missed out crucial themes of the book. The book, of course, was delicious.
