YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY

KarenjoyfowlerYou all seem to love your Austen (and rightly so!) but despite Richard and Judy's book club endorsement, The Jane Austen Book Club hasn't been so universally adored and Jenni's review gave it a big fat nay.

Am I the only one who loved it, finding it entertaining, witty and well-written? *Hides under table*

Tell us: is it a Yay or a Nay, and Why?

[Don't forget to vote Yay or Nay at Hippyshopper, Bridalwave, Corrie Blog, Catwalk Queen, Kiss and Makeup, The Bag Lady, Shoewawa and Shiny Shiny, too!]

YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY - Comments

  • I&#39ve basically been doing nothing to speak of. Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I feel like a void, but that&#39s how it is. I&#39ve just been hanging out doing nothing.

  • I guess it has to be a Nay for me, since it&#39s not a Yay (but maybe you could change Wednesdays to Yay or Nay or Meh ...)

It has some nice moments and one particularly good character (Allegra), but I have no idea why it&#39s as popular as it is.

The main thing that bugged me is it&#39s written from the point of view of one of the members of the Book Group - we did this, the first time we met, our youngest member, etc. - but they also serve as an omnicient narrator, i.e. knowing and witnessing stuff that a member of the group couldn&#39t possibly have known or witnessed. Kind of like Mary Alice in DH - so perhaps the narrator is ... dead! Or perhaps it&#39s meant to be Austen herself! I wouldn&#39t be surprised because that was the other think I disliked - the fact that the appendix consists of critical reaction to Jane Austen, not Karen Joy Fowler - does KJF think she *is* Jane Austen?

Sorry, got a bit ranty there. I&#39ll go and have a nice sit down.
