YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY

PandpMansfield_1I finally saw Reader I Married Him when it was repeated on Sunday, and it was great! But in an interview about the importance of book covers, author Deborah Moggach was rather critical of the new Jane Austen cover designs, which have a more modern chick-lit feel. She even said they 'demean' Austen! Sophie Kinsella however, thought they were a great idea, but will they bring in new readers? More importantly, do you like them, or is it sacrilege? Tell us Yay or Nay- and why!

(Give the ladies at Catwalk Queen a vote, too!)

Yay - I think the designs are pretty. Why stick with a stuffy cover just because it's a a classic?!

I love them. And I don't think they're chick litty at all, they're just pretty. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I like them! Not that I judge books by their covers... ;)

I like them. They might draw in new readers. And it's the words that are sacred, not the covers. It's not like even the stuffy "classics" covers are the original covers, so if you're not using the original covers (did they even do real cover art back then?), then why not use covers updated for the times?

I really love them. I much prefer them to the old style ones. I agree that they might pull in new readers - I think young girls will be far more likely to give them a go if they look like this.

I'm really on the fence. I think in some ways it makes perfect sense to rebrand them in a chick lit style, after all she was one of the first real chick lit writers...but at the same time I always think Austen books should be in those 99p 'classics' jackets, with old paintings on, if only to keep my collection looking uniform.

Ah well, a yay anyway. If it makes more people read austen on the train, it can only be a good thing.
