Are books unethical?

I asked yesterday if you were interested in e-books, but I'm fairly sure we all prefer to read a book in its original (paper) format. But have you considered the environmental impact of books?

In her BA Conference address on Consumer Trends, Dr Michelle Harrison of the Henley Centre showed a photograph of a crowded bookshelf and asked, "Is this unethical? Is it right to have such a display of paper in one's home? Do we feel uncomfortable about this, ostentatious even?"

As Publishing News put it, "The implication was clear - digital is greener." [via Book2Book]

It's an interesting point. What do you think?

  • Since I asked for a paper copy from you, Lucie, you know I agree!

"maybe it&#39s a good argument FOR used book trading sites and sales."

It really is, isn&#39t it, Susan. But authors really don&#39t like them (cut into their profits).

"Maybe when e-book readers are solar powered, they can make that environmental claim stick harder."

Another great point and I don&#39t imagine that would be difficult. In fact, I&#39m now a bit perturbed that they didn&#39t make them solar powered from the beginning!

  • Interesting point; maybe it&#39s a good argument FOR used book trading sites and sales.

However, I don&#39t read as well on the screen as I do on the page, and I still prefer the feel of a book, the quiet rustle of turning pages -- and the fact that it&#39s not powered by electricity or a battery. Maybe when e-book readers are solar powered, they can make that environmental claim stick harder.

  • I think digital is the way of the future, but it isn&#39t the present. I happen to have been published in e-book format, and it is clear that e-book readers are few and far between. I think in maybe 5 or 10 years we&#39ll see them becoming more popular as the e-reader technology improves. But for now, most readers enjoy holding the pages of a book in their hands, and I happen to be one of them.
