Fancy a bookswapping party?

Bethanne Patrick of Publishers Weekly writes about a bookswapping party she recently attended:

The rules were, and remain, elegantly simple: bring any books in good condition that you're finished owning. You can take the same number as you bring (although by each bookswapping night's end, this rule is usually broken). We pile the books in a central location, pour wine and beer, and grab plates of nosh.

It was easy, it was fun, and everyone went home with something new. (There are always books left over, and it's up to the evening's host to scoop them all up and keep them, or give them to a library... the latter always wins. After all, we need room for the new ones we've collected.)

Sounds great, yes? If any of my friends actually lived anywhere near me, I'd so be doing this! Has anyone actually had one of these parties or attended one?

I have had a clothes swapping party before. VERY successful. Walked away with new boots, denim jacket, top that looks remarkably like that Kate Moss flowery number... good deals all round. I would love to have a book swapping party. I have got SO many books I'm not sure what to do with. The main problem for me would be carting them away! I used to do the Bookcrossing thing but only about 1 book ever got signed back in, so I stopped doing it!

I gave up on Bookcrossing for the same reason, Katie. Also because I suspected a lot of the books just got thrown away (which I *hate* the idea of!).

If you don't have local readers, try www.paperbackswap.com, same concept but online. There is a great community and I've gotten almost brand-new books that I wouldn't have been able to buy.
