BOOK NEWS: Chore Whore by Heather H Howard

ChorewhoreCelebrity addicted as I am, I love the idea behind Chore Whore, subtitled Adventures of a Celebrity Personal Assistant.

What I'm not too sure about is the title. I read yesterday (in The Guardian) that Councilwoman Darlene Mealy of Brooklyn has called for the word "bitch" to be banned in New York. Despite feminist attempts to reclaim the word, Councilwoman Mealy feels that its usage is all about male dominance.

How do you feel about the word "whore"? If it was just this book I probably wouldn't worry, but there's also Iris Bahr's Dork Whore and the repetition of it in Karen McCullah Lutz's The Bachelorette Party bothered Diane.

So what do you think? Is it just a bit of fun or is it a trend that should probably be nipped in the bud?

  • I dig the use of the words "whore" and "bitch" in humorous context. The fact that women have claimed these words to describe their behavior, has weakened the terms&#39 nastiness. I agree with Danielle. If someone called me a whore or a bitch, I&#39d proudly agree with them - knowing what those words mean to me.

  • Personally I think it&#39s a bit of fun when used in this context - then again, I spend most of my time on the internet where that word is used in general talk. (It&#39s not really that uncommon to see people jokingly refer to themselves as &#39shoe whores&#39, &#39traffic whores&#39 (in terms of blogs) or generally being a whore in terms of liking something excessively.

I think it&#39s an awful insult, but then again having got so used to the word I don&#39t think I&#39d be that insulted if, God forbid, someone DID call me a whore. WOuld probably just shrug as it&#39s nothing new, when it would have been a horrific insult years ago.
