Five books everyone should read at least once

We've featured book lists before here on Trashionista. The five books that encouraged and inspired you as a reader. Ten books you can't live without. And the book that first got you hooked. But this list - five books everyone should read at least once - is Oprah approved.

The books are Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, Four Quarters by TS Eliot, The Wisdom of the Desert: Sayings from the Desert Fathers of the Fourth Century translated by Thomas Merton, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.

How many have you read?

Five books everyone should read at least once - Comments

  • Well, I haven&#39t read any of them, but I saw the film adaptation of Lolita and I dug it. I also saw a stage version of Waiting for Godot and thought it frightfully dull. And I think I&#39ll probably skip the rest. My to-be-read pile is already enormous!

  • Phew, I&#39m not the only one who hasn&#39t read any of them! I wouldn&#39t mind reading Lolita, but as for the rest, I&#39m not interested.

  • I haven&#39t read a single one. Are these THE five books everybody should read at least once, or just five books?

Your list makes me want to re-read Lolita. I&#39ll put it on my "to do" list. As for Achebe: I agree that everyone should read it. It&#39s one of those books whose ideas stick with you.

I was forced to read things fall apart in high school or college (I forget). I found it kind of impenetrable. I&#39ve never read the others... but I have read "Reading Lolita In Tehran," and I think that&#39s close enough.
