Your thoughts on You’ve Got Mail

There were some strong feelings about The Devil Wears Prada when we discussed it last week so today I’m asking what you thought of You’ve Got Mail?

I knew it was rom com, so I knew that Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan had to get together (them’s the rules) but I just didn’t see how it could happen. He destroyed her business! And she fell in love with him! Get a grip woman.

I watched the whole film wondering how the writers were going to wriggle out of the situation but, alas, they didn’t. They let her fall in love with the rat that ruined her livelihood.

I was going to finish this piece with the sentence *I bet it was written by a man*, but then I remembered it’s a Nora Ephron film…

I agree Tvor. I heard an interesting discussion about it on Will Write For Wine - that you can&#39t have your protagonist fall in love with the antagonist, but, like you say, in traditional romance it happens all the time.

It being a problem hadn&#39t actually occurred to me until I heard the discussion... which I&#39m pretty embarrassed about.

It&#39s classic though. I always equate this sort of plot with the old Harlequin Romances or standard issue romance plots. Boy meets girl. They hate each other or one hates the other and then they end up loving each other. Often there&#39s a major crisis like an illness or accident that makes them realize they love each other. He ruined her business but he didn&#39t set out to do it deliberately. He does learn a bit of humility along the way, seeing how the big corporate actions really do affect the little people. Not that it makes a difference. It&#39s still all about business. And it kind of ends with a bit of hope that she&#39ll find something new and wonderful to do and of course she&#39ll have him and he&#39s got lots of money too. It was pretty standard issue predictable stuff but i don&#39t mind that if the writing is decent and the actors are charismatic.

I liked it for it&#39s period setting - the clothes and sets and everything were gorgeous, I just thought the whole &#39he&#39s so arrogant, I have to have him&#39 thing was stupid.

That said, I also liked DWP and You&#39ve Got Mail - they would just have been a lot better without the love interest - Andi should have stayed at the mag and become a high flyer, and Meg Ryan should have kidnapped and tortured Tom Hanks in gruesome ways for ruining her life (that&#39s a film I&#39d pay to see!)
