BOOK NEWS: Coleen McLoughlin gets a five-book deal

We should have called this celebrity week at Trashionista. After news of Kerry Katona’s second book due out next year, comes an amazing five-book deal for, can you believe it, Coleen McLoughlin! The publishing house in question is HarperCollins and Ms. McLoughlin will not, apparently, have to write her novels. Phew. All that writing would interfere with the shopping.

I agree with Kerri. If she&#39s not writing the books, then what, exactly, is the point? It&#39s treating all us booklovers as idiots in a way, because it&#39s just trying to get as much money out of consumers as possible. By putting Coleen&#39s name to the novels, they&#39re pretty much guarenteed that more people will buy them. Which is pretty shallow. It&#39s a question of pride. There are thousands of would-be authors (including me and Kerri) who would love to have five-book, or even a one-book deal, and it&#39s incredibly frustrating to see them dished out so easily to people with presumably zero writing talent. Maybe she can write, but if so she should rather write them herself. I&#39d rather be the &#39author&#39 of a not-that-great or decent book where I&#39d written every single word myself, than put my name to a good book that&#39s entirely someone else&#39s work. Where is the honesty and integrity?

  • As a debut novelist struggling to promote her book, this kind of thing really gets me down.
