BOOK COVER: Romance v Chick lit

AnyoneromanceAnyonechick I know that Jennifer Crusie doesn't consider her books chick lit (I've asked why not, but haven't yet received a reply), but I thought her books were the best to use to compare romance covers with chick lit covers.

So on the left we have the original edition of Anyone But You. On the right, the re-released version.

But Jennifer Crusie's not the only author whose books have made the switch from romance to chick lit (without, you know, actually changing at all) - check out a couple of Meg Cabot covers over the cut.

ShewentromanceShewentall On the left is She Went All the Way from back when Meg was Meggin. On the right is the newer, "Brand Meg", chick litty cover.

Which do you prefer?

BOOK COVER: Romance v Chick lit - Comments

  • Actually, I totally abhor all the "illustrated" (bad cutout people in square shapes) covers. It will make me put the book back on the shelf.

I like the "new" cover on the Cruisie book featured, but neither of the Megan Cabot books would make it into my shopping basket, much less onto my shelf.

I wouldn&#39t even pull them from the local library.

Sorry. Hate the cover, and it puts me off enough to not even read the blurb.

And if it&#39s pink... I won&#39t buy it, ever. I&#39m not a pink person.

WTF is Chick Lit anyway? If it&#39s Romance, then SAY SO. And if reading romance (or writing romance) is too embarrassing... then... wow. We&#39ve finally caved in to the "trash" labeling romance has been given for years.

  • I think covers are so very important, and unfortunately, most authors have absolutely no say in what their covers will be. The first Crusie cover is typical of those "category" romances in which cheezy covers almost never reflect the tone/voice/attitude of the book and therefore completely turn me off. On the other hand, I too, prefer the "Meggin" cover. I personally love illustrated covers - especially for chick lit.

On Jennifer&#39s book, I prefer the newer version, which is the one I bought. For readers who look down on the series romances (not me!), seeing the first cover, they would miss out on a wonderful author!

On Meg&#39s books, I bought the first one again, and it was the first of her books I ever read. I think I like that cover better, but maybe because I had to stare at the second cover for several seconds, twice, before my brain registered that the picture is a foot and not a neck!
