Book Video Awards 2008

We've been banging on about book trailers for a while now and they've certainly been growing in both popularity and quality, but the new Book Video Awards should up the ante across the board.

The awards are a new scheme between the National Film and Television School (NFTS), Random House, The Bookseller and Play.com. Students at the NFTS were challenged to make a book video for Matt Beaumont's Small World, Lauren Groff's Monsters of Templeton and The Outcast by Sadie Jones. Hop over here to see the winning trailers.

Book Video Awards 2008 - Comments

  • Hi Sheila, thanks so much for commenting - great to hear from someone on the inside! Sarah

  • I love the Book Awards. There are also the Teen Book Awards that are good too.

And though I agree that book trailers are getting better in quality, the real challange is budget. You get what you pay for.

These book trailers from the Book Video Awards would cost well over $15,000 (US)to create. Who is going to pay that?

People don&#39t realize that students have their insurance already paid for them, they don&#39t have to purchase or rent equipment, they get state of the art equipment purchased by the school, many props and wardrobe supplied, and no location fees. They are, most likely, using student actors as well, who they don&#39t have to pay, or pay very little too. And no one has to worry about SAG (screen actor&#39s guild).

Also remember that these are the "winners" and represent the creme of the crop, so to speak.

As someone who has been making book trailers since 2002, I am acutely aware of budgets and liabilities.

If someone paid me over $10,000 to create a book trailer, I could deliver this kind of quality as well. So could a lot of producers.

With that said, it does not take away from the absolutely wonderful trailers that these are. They are totally deserving of their win! And I hope to see more and more of these since it helps bring awareness, not just to book trailers, but to reading.

    Great blog!

    Sheila
