The new Sweet Valley High books are already leaving a sour taste

How excited was I to hear that the Sweet Valley High series was being reissued? This excited.

And then today I learned that the books aren't just being reissued, they've been updated. Ominous, no? Well, yes, particularly when you discover that in the original books the Wakefield twins "wore a perfect size 6" and in the new books they are now "a perfect size 4".

As Gawker puts it "just to make sure preteen and teenaged girl readers are sufficiently insecure about their bodies, the publisher made the "perfect" clothing size a couple of notches more restrictive".

Puts the new Famous 5 into perspective, doesn't it?

(Thanks, Gemma.)

I remember being 14 and buying a fantastic silver dress in a size 6 and feeling awesome because it was the same "perfect" size those twins were....I hate to think that I wouldn&#39t have the same chance if I were that age today.

  • I don&#39t know why sizes need to be mentioned anyway - a good adjective would do instead. Just say they are slender or athletic or whatever to give the reader an image, but no need to hit us all over the head with the "perfect" size!

  • That&#39s a good point, Lily, but I don&#39t care. :) I still think it sends a bad message.

  • Yes, it&#39s true that sizes in the USA have changed, and the twins are the same size.

I think if you lose the word &#39perfect&#39, there&#39s no problem. What&#39s &#39perfect&#39 about any size, after all?

Well, at first thought, i was completely horrified by this. But then i started thinking... Sizes have inflated a lot in the last decade or so. When i buy vintage, i&#39m always two sizes bigger than i am buying new. So, does it really mean anything that they&#39ve shifted size? If we asked the Powers That Be, would they tell us that Elizabeth and Jessica are still the same measurements, it&#39s just that clothing sizes have changed? Maybe preteen girls these days think of size 4 the same way we thought of size 6, after all.
