I know you're against the destruction of books for no good reason (which, you know, is fair enough!), but what about defacing books to turn them into art?
I absolutely love these prints by PinkyBrown on Etsy. Pictured is a mixed media piece - part illustration, part collage, and embroidered with the word 'Lovely' - created on a page from Shakespeare's Cymbeline.
