Jackie Collins on chick lit

Jackie Collins is a legend. So when I was given the chance to ask her a question to be answered on video, I leaped at it. What did I ask? "What do you think of chick lit?" of course. And her answer is ... well, see for yourself (and please leave a comment - I'd love to know what you think!).

Jackie Collins on chick lit - Comments

  • I&#39ve never read a Jackie Collins - curious to, though!

Maybe it&#39s time for a new Guardian blog... (eek). I was all for reclaiming the term and making it our own - like teh gay community did with &#39queer&#39, but I&#39m not sure it can be done. Sigh... x

  • Ahhh yes, Lucky Santangelo. She was the Hotel Owner wasn&#39t she? And her Dad featured in some of it. It&#39s call trickling back now!

  • Keris

That&#39s what I thought. It was the "spots" bit that got me. I can&#39t remember a chick lit book that focussed on spots.

Diane - you&#39re just starting to think that now?! And after your Guardian blog?! :)

She&#39s still a legend though. And the new book features Lucky Santangelo, who must surely be about 70 now, no? Still. I&#39m quite excited to read it. Haven&#39t read a Jackie Collins for about 20 years.

  • Isn&#39t that the message of a lot of chick lit?!

Y&#39know... I&#39m starting to think the term for the books we love is doing more damage to their reputation than the content of the books - which is of course what was intended by the name "chick lit" -- derision.

People who haven&#39t read the books can then dismiss it as a genre, without reading *any*...

  • Sounds like somebody who has not read much chick-lit and is basing her opinion on the hype surrounding Bridget Jones as the model for all chick lit if you ask me.

Not that I didn&#39t LOVE Bridget Jones, but really, chick lit has come a long, long way from, "Oooh, I&#39m waiting for the phone to ring."

    Oh, Jackie.

I know I have read Jackie Collins back in my formative years but do you think I can remember the names of any of the ones I&#39ve read? I don&#39t mean to turn this into a contest but I can remember every Marian Keyes I&#39ve picked up. That is all.
