Do you have to have a happy ending?

41jka7w23el_sl500_aa240_ I've just read a blog post about The Double Life of Anna Day by Louise Candlish. The blog's author says, "I threw away this book ... cause it's the first chick lit book I ever read without a happy ending!!! For goodness sake author, don't you know why people read chick lits?? Cause we need a run from reality and we turn to chick lit books so we can get all sappy and happy when we read the happily ever after ending! Who would want to read a chick lit book that leaves you in despair? Who would read a chick lit book that solidifies our doubts if true love exist??!! No one."

I haven't read The Double Life of Anna Day, but I certainly don't agree that there's no room for chick lit books without happy endings. (Plus I don't read chick lit to confirm that true love exists.) What about you?

Haha. Omgoodness. I can believe I'm being quoted. =p
Well, the book was actually quite funny in the beginning but halfway through, it just lost its magical touch. It isn't one of those books that you have and must to finish it immediately NO MATTER WHAT if you get what I mean. =p I'm a nobody to comment if you should or shouldn't read this book but personally, I'm still disappointed with the ending. =)

P.s. I would recommend the book 'The art of Undressing' by Stephanie Lehmann. It was really funny. =D

Like "nps", I tend to choose my reads as a "run from reality" and I stay away from books that are too depressing. However, to say that every book must have a fairy-tale ending is a bit overboard. Books need to be as varied as the people who read them.

Hahaa. Yes, I agree with you. =) I read all types of books too but I only read chick lits when I need an 'escape' from reality even if just for a few hours.

Hmm... I love a good chick lit book. Especially this time of year. The happy ending is nice but not necessary. Sometimes it's nice when things aren't tied up with a bow.

Hmmmm, I thought happy endings were a requirement of the romance genre not chick lit. I like an escape from reality but I don't need a happy ending with my chick lit books.
