Laugh Out Loud

Over on her blog Jennifer Weiner has highlighted the fact that none of the editors from The New York Times Book Review could name a book, written by a woman, that made them laugh out loud. (Many of them named Catch-22, which personally, makes me want to poke my eyes out with a sharp pencil.)

No female authors at all. Which is sad and slightly bizarre as when I put in the phrase "laugh out loud" into the Trashionista search engine I come up with 149 posts.

Jennifer Weiner often has me chuckling away. But what about you? Which female authors make you laugh out loud?

Ooh good thinking on the "laugh out loud" search! I felt a bit sheepish when I read JW's post, because the funniest books I've ever read have all been by men, but that doesn't mean I haven't read any funny books by women!

Marian Keyes springs to mind, as does Anna Maxted's Getting Over It and, as JW said, Jen Lancaster. Meg Cabot too... (I'm thinking...) Caprice Crane. Luisa Plaja's Split By A Kiss has one particular line in that makes me laugh even now if I happen to think of it. Janet Evanovich, of course!

As for Catch 22, I don't think I've ever made it past the first page!

Gosh, so many! But to pick an example: I just finished reading "it's a kind of magic" by carole matthews and it was hilarious!

Keris - I had to use the search engine as my memory is appalling at the moment! I did come across your review for Lucy Diamond's Any Way You Want Me in my search which you described as "I read it curled up on the couch laughing, gasping, shouting". This happened to me recently for a book I reviewed and I'm racking my brains to think of what it might have been! Gah! It was definitely written by a woman though.

None at all? Losers.

I read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum mystery series solely because Grandma Masur makes me laugh so hard.

Tanya Huff's Keeper's Chronicles trilogy
made me laugh, particularly the first two.

In science fiction, there's Connie Willis.

In chick lit, Jenny Colgan and Wendy Holden. Sarah Bird's earlier books, before she went serious.

Definitely Jennifer Lancaster

Sophie Kinsella, Jennifer Weiner, Jen Lancaster, Janet Evanovich, Meg Cabot, Stacey Ballis, Stephenie Meyer (who cares if she's YA?).

So many. This is why I canceled my subscription to the NY Times. IDIOTS!

Rita Mae Brown's early novels - Six of One - Southern Discomfort - Bingo - Loose Lips - for example, had me rolling on the floor!

Reading Marian Keyes and Sophie Kinsella always gets me strange stares in the subway because they always have me laughing out loud!

That's easy: Jen Lancaster & Caprice Crane....the kind of laugh out loud funny where I make my husband listen as I read him passages of their books while we are trapped in cars or planes..... ;)

How about Jill Amy Rosenblatt? Her "Project Jennifer" was hilarious!
