With only two weeks left of National Novel Writing Month, participants are making their way to the finish line. Okay, some (like yours truly) are lagging a little but hey, there's still time...
This week, Trashionista spoke to Angela, a 20-year-old journalism student who's taking part in NaNo with her novel This Music Fits Your Ears. Read on!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I am 20 years old, I'm originally from Saint Louis, Missouri, but spent my last three years of college in North Carolina. I attend college in San Francisco but am currently on a study abroad trip in Tuebingen, Germany! As a journalism major I love writing, discovering music and I am also avid tennis player.
Have you participated in NaNoWriMo before?
I have never participated in NaNoWriMo before but always thought about it. This year a plot fell from my head two days before it began, so I knew this year was it.
Can you tell us more about the project you're working on?
My project is a dual perspective novel called This Music Fits Your Ears, Too. It is about a man named Oliver, 23, who ran away from home at 16 and never returned. He has come down to North Carolina to finally settle down and figure out what he's doing in life. But he begins to endangered runaway signs, and they are all for him.
Avery is junior in college pursing a career in music supervision. She is studying journalism and has planned her route to the top, but she just needs the big break. She is intrigued with Oliver and starts leaving him mysterious CDs. She lives right next door to a family that has been posting posters of the same endangered runaway for three yeas since meeting a nice family while on vacation. This year might just change more than a few lives...
How do you (or how are you planning to) find the time to write? Are you organised?
I am spending nearly every nook and cranny of free time to write. I write on anything I can get my hands on. Receipts, flashcards, when the moment strikes I write it out, and type it all together when I get home. It's been stressful, but I'm pushing through.
Do you outline, or just go where the story takes you?
I outline because if not I feel my characters just take a hold of themselves and the plot gets crazy and I have to reign them back in. Just the other day Oliver decided he wanted to buy a white pickup truck, the nerve!
Where do you do most of your writing?
I do most of my writing in my room in a simple college ruled notebook. I'm not a fan of typing my drafts on the computer, it's much easier to revise as I write when it's on lined paper. But when the inspiration strikes I've been know to start writing while in the classroom.
Do you hope to become a published author, or do you do NaNo for fun?
I am doing NaNo for fun, but I would love to be published if the novel turns out well. As a kid I wanted to be an author so that's still a pretty high aim in life but it's not a priority right now.
Do you have any tips for other NaNoers?
Have fun and take life into account. Even fantasy was created from something true.
Thanks, Angela!
