Publishers HarperCollins have joined ITV1's 'The Alan Titchmarsh Show' in order to find 'The People's Novelist', The Bookseller revealed today.

The competition is being launched to find a new commercial fiction writer and is set to run until the autumn, with novelist Cathy Kelly to head the judging team of three.

Cathy Kelly said: 'I'm simply thrilled to be a part of the People's Novelist competition. There's a wealth of wonderful talent out there, so many marvelous writers who are just waiting for a chance to be published. This competition is about nurturing wonderful talent and giving a marvelous new author a chance to shine.'

HarperFiction publisher Lynne Drew said: 'Already a hugely generous mentor to aspiring writers, Cathy is the perfect person to work with the show to discover new talent. Her warmth, empathy and huge talent for storytelling mean that she will help to pick out a future star.'

Writers will be able to submit their entries over the summer, with the final 12 to appear in a series of autumn heats.

The winner will receive a one-book deal with HarperFiction plus an advance of 10,000. Their book will be published in 2012.
