AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Mel Sherratt

me.JPGMel Sherratt's debut novel Taunting The Dead has recently been released and we couldn't wait to get the latest news on this brand new thriller! In addition to her books, Mel also writes the fabulous blog High Heels and Book Deals. We spoke to Mel to find out more...

What inspired you to write Taunting the Dead?

It was a snippet I kept hearing on the news. When any one is murdered or killed under suspicious circumstances, neighbours and friends are invariably interviewed on the television. Amidst their shock and grief, they always say things like how lovely a person was, how they were a joy to know, great with their family etc. I got to thinking, what if someone was murdered that people didn't actually care for that much. From that initial thought, Taunting the Dead was born. That single nutmeg is still in the story but it is much different than that now.

Where do you do most of your writing?

Dare I say, on the settee! I do have an office upstairs but since having my puppy, Dexter, (who is now six months old and perfectly capable of being left alone downstairs) I tend to use my lap top. I also write a lot at the kitchen table when the weather is warm with the doors open.

taunting the dead ms.jpgWhat is your favourite book?

One book? Really? Gosh, I don't know if I can. Okay, then. I've always had a soft spot for SUSHI FOR BEGINNERS by Marian Keyes. I just love the way the main character Lisa is portrayed and how she changes throughout the book. I really enjoy books where the reader can go on the journey along with the character.

Which part of Taunting the Dead was the most enjoyable to write?

Hmm, quite a hard question to answer because I write about murder and mayhem! I suppose it was a challenge, therefore the most enjoyable, to create the sexual tension that develops between the main suspect and my female detective sergeant.

What are you currently reading?

I'm halfway through and dying to finish THE MURDER WALL by Mari Hannah, which is out in April this year. Next, I have ME BEFORE YOU by Jojo Moyes, which is getting some great reviews and then CATCH YOUR DEATH by Louise Voss and Mark Edwards.

Who is your favourite heroine?

I had to pass on this question and come back to it once I'd answered the ones below. As a crime writer, a lot of the main characters in crime fiction that I enjoy reading about are men - Roy Grace, Tom Thorne and Rebus. But in the all the genres that I read, I love Bridget Jones. She's sassy, modern and easily standing the test of time. And she wears big pants!

Do you have any tips for readers who are looking to become published authors?

NEVER give up. I know it's such a cliché but it's true. If you're passionate about what you do, your words will shine.

Are you working on anything else at the moment and if so, can you tell us?

I have ideas for follow-ups to Taunting the Dead, book two and three. I would love to continue the series as lots of people seem to like my main character, which is great. There's also a cliff hanger at the end of Taunting the Dead and because I've had a lot of feedback from people wanting to know its outcome, it's made me want to start writing book two so that's where I am now. I would love to get a traditional deal this year and have book two come out as part of that deal. But if it's not to be, then I shall self publish book two later in the year.

Thanks, Mel!
