Bridget Jones's Diary
Helen Fielding's loveable heroine Bridget Jones is believed by many to have started chick-lit. Bridget, the sweary twenty-something with a penchant for smoking and diarising her hilarious London life in the late 90s made readers fall for her, so it was no surprise when the adaptation was released in 2001 starring Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant - and of course, Colin Firth as the lovely Mr Darcy. The sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, followed in 2004.
