NEW RELEASE (and a competition!): Win a copy of Insatiable by Meg Cabot

insatiablemeg.jpgHere's some news that'll please fans of Meg Cabot (Trashionista included!) After her highly successful adult books including the Heather Wells series (Size 12 is Not Fat) and Queen of Babble, Meg's latest adult novel, Insatiable, is out today - and we have two copies of the book to give away.

Here's the synopsis of Insatiable:

Vampires. This isn't the first time they've taken a bite out of popular culture.  And with INSATIABLE (June 8), #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot blends trend with tradition as only she can to create a fresh, funny, pulse-pounding and poignant update of our darkest eternal Gothic romance, Dracula.

Sick of hearing about vampires?  So is Meena Harper.  But as a writer for Insatiable, the second-hottest daytime soap (thanks to her burdensome if lucrative psychic ability to see into the future and determine how people are going to die), Meena's being forced to use a vampire story line to boost ratings.  But, just as Insatiable is switching to a vampire theme to attract a younger demographic, a spate of chilling murders-by-exsanguinations grips New York City.

Enter Lucien Antonescu, a sexy, melancholic Romanian history professor / vampire who recognizes that the murders are the work of rogue vampires who have broken away from his order (Lucien happens to be the son of Vlad the Impaler, whom Bram Stoker gave such a bad rep).  Lucien's opposition: Alaric Wulf, a sympathetic detective from the Palatine Guard, who hopes to use Meena and her prophetic gift to stop the murders and track down Lucien.

Unfortunately for Alaric, Meena is a little in love with Lucien.

Meg Cabot winningly applies her trademark likable fallible protagonists and breezy storytelling.  With INSATIABLE, she injects some much needed Gothic romance (and humor) back into the vampire oeuvre, and once again stakes her claim as the "master of her genre."

VIEW THE INSATIABLE TRAILER!

To order your copy, click here. Or to find out more about Meg Cabot and her books, check out Meg's official website.

Trashionista has two copies of the book to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, simply leave a comment below. Don't forget to fill in the email address field so that we can contact you if you are a winner. However, this competition is open to US RESIDENTS ONLY.

Good luck!

Marian Keyes 'laid low' with depression

mariankeyes.jpgBestselling author Marian Keyes has recently revealed that she has been suffering from  'crippling depression' over the festive period.

On her blog, Marian stated that she feels as though she can't eat, can't sleep, read, write or talk to people. Marian is known the world over for her wonderful books - including Rachel's Holiday, This Charming Man, The Brightest Star in the Sky - and has been dubbed the Queen of Chick-Lit.

Marian's blog entry reads: 'Regular readers know that I've been prone to depression on and off over the years but this is in a totally different league. This is much much worse. I know I'm leaving myself open to stinky journalists saying 'What has she got to be depressed about, the self-indulgent whiner, when there are people out there with real troubles?' so I won't go on about it.

All I will say is that I'm aware that these are terrible times and that there are people out there who have been so ruined by the current economic climate that they've lost the roof over their heads and every day is a battle for basic survival and I wish I could make their pain go away. But although I'm blessed enough to have a roof over my head, I still feel like I'm living in hell. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't write, I can't read, I can't talk to people.

I've been trying to read helpful, comforting and inspiring bits and pieces because I can't manage novels and I've included some of them at the bottom of the page, in the hope that you might find them helpful, comforting and inspiring at some time too.'

We hope that Marian returns soon. Click here to visit her website.

New Year: What are your resolutions?

bridgetjones.jpgIts a brand new year, and thus Trashionista declares January the month of inspiration. In the past I've been a total failure at keeping resolutions (yep - TOTAL FAILURE) so this year is going to be that all-important Year of Change. More work, more exercise, less money on things I don't really need...

Well, we'll see how it goes.

But what about you? Are you planning on changing anything this year? Are you avioding making resolutions or welcoming them with open arms (And a bottle of wine on New Years' Eve?) a la Bridget Jones? Tell us your hopes for 2010!

Head on over to YS Lee's new site for news about the first book in the Agency series, A Spy in the House, and the upcoming sequel The Body at The Tower. Here's some info about the latest title:

This is another colourful, action-packed Victorian detective novel about the exploits of agent Mary Quinn. At a young age, Mary Quinn is rescued from the gallows and taken to Miss Scrimshaw's Academy for Girls. The school turns out to be a front for a private detective agency. At age 17, Mary takes on her first case (A Spy in the House). In this, the second book of the series, Mary Quinn sets out to uncover the truth behind a suspicious death at St Stephen's Tower, better known as the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. Goodbye from Helen

Helen I’m afraid the time has come when I have to say goodbye. I’ve been writing for Trashionista for ooh, well over a year now, but it’s time to move on. I want to say a huge thank you to all the readers, commenters, authors and publishers who have made writing for this site so darn enjoyable. I will really miss it.

I will not be dropping out of the blogisphere however. Please do feel free to pop over to my personal blog to see what I’m getting up to next.

Introducing Elle Symonds

ElleMy name's Elle and I'm extremely happy to be working here at Trashionista. I'm a 20-something supergeek from Wales who cant wait to bring you news and reviews from the chick-lit world. Seeing as you don't know me yet, here's a little interview. (Self-interrogation; it's all the rage, apparently!)

When did you start reading chick-lit?
I first got into chick-lit in 2004, when I picked up The Second Assistant by Clare Naylor and Mimi Hare. It looked witty and interesting, so I bought it. After that? I was hooked.

What's your favourite chick-lit book?

Hmm, difficult question! I don't have a specific favourite, although there are a few that I could read again and again. One being Maria Beaumont's Marsha Mellow and Me (it's downright hilarious!) I'm also into paranormal chick-lit and rather liked Blood is the New Black by Valerie Stivers. And, of course, let's not forget the fabulous Undead series...

What are your favourite non-chicklit books?
I read a bit of everything, and I'd have to say that my favourite books out of the chicklit genre would be Alexander Cordell's Rape of the Fair Country, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

Any guilty pleasures?

Ooo! Well now that you ask-

We mean book-wise, of course.

Oh. Right. Weelll...I do frequent the teen section of Waterstones. For Meg Cabot especially. Aw c'mon, who doesn't?

Do you want world peace?
Why yes. Yes I do.

Introducing Robyn Wilder

DollymixrobynFresh from guest editing Dollymix for a month, Robyn Wilder joins Trashionista as a regular writer.  You can read all about her on her blog, Orbyn.elsewhere.

Favourite chick lit book
: Watermelon by Marian Keyes.  It was my introduction into chick lit as a genre, and I’ve reread it about five times.  I love how it breaks all the rules of fiction writing (telling rather than showing; many, many adverbs!) but still manages to be heartbreaking and hilarious.

Favourite chick lit author: Marian Keyes, rather predictably. I haven’t read a single book of hers that I don’t like.  I totally buy into all her characters, and I love the way her style is still conversational and easy to read even as the stories get more complex.  This Charming Man was very ambitious (there is a particularly traumatic scene I’ll never get out of my head) but she draws you in and makes it all seem effortless.

Favourite fictional heroine: Well, I’m a geek so obviously I’m a big fan of Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!  Partly because of her attitude, rebellious style and choice turns of phrase (“five by five!”).  But also because of Faith’s situation – in every generation, a vampire slayer is called, but Buffy’s still alive – still the “chosen one” – so Faith is essentially redundant, which makes for interesting psychology!  Um, yes – told you I was a geek.

Favourite non chick lit book: The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter.  My teenage discovery of “magical realism” led to countless pretentious short stories which will hopefully never see the light of day!

Do you have a theme song? The novel I wrote (and am still finishing) for NaNoWriMo is about a slightly clueless girl who discovers, amongst other things, her hidden strengths and ability to deal with what life throws at her.  In my head, the theme song for the film of the book(!) is 80s favourite Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel.

Hello (again) from Helen

Well I'm back from maternity leave after giving birth to my beautiful baby girl. She is well and lovely and everything a mother could wish for.

But enough about the baby, I hear you cry. What about the books?

Well, whilst I've been on *holiday* I've managed to read Class by Jane Beaton and The Bright Side of Disaster by Katherine Center, both of which I loved and cannot recommend enough.

Two of my favourite authors, Meg Cabot and Tess Gerritsen both have new releases. Meg with the final Princess Mia book and Tess with a return of Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles. Reviews of both will be coming soon. Also Lisa Jewell has a new book out in April (more about that later). So, which books are you looking forward to reading this year?

Goodbye from Keris

MeI'm sure you've noticed that Trashionista's been pretty quiet lately. That's mainly because Helen and I have been brewing babies rather than reviewing books. Helen's daughter arrived five weeks ago and my little boy is due - eek! - today.

During my time off, I've actually made the very difficult decision not to return as editor of Trashionista following maternity leave. I've been with the site for more than two years and I've absolutely loved it, but I've got my own book deal now, so I could do with writing rather than reading! And there's the small matter of a new baby to take care of.

I just want to say an enormous thank you to all the lovely, talented and enthusiastic readers, authors and publishers who have made working for Trashionista an absolute breeze! I'll miss you all. Feel free to drop in on my personal blog and say hello.

(The hunt is on for a new editor, so hopefully the site will be back in action in no time.)

More Trashionista news!

Following Sarah's announcement that she's taking a break from Trashionista, some of you sent me (Keris) best wishes and congratulations, which was lovely, but I'm not going anywhere. No, you're stuck with me - the editorship of Trashionista will have to be prized out of my cold, dead hands.

Though Sarah will be much missed, I'm happy to announce that her replacement is Helen Redfern, who you may remember from such posts as Helen's Heroines. Welcome, Helen!

Goodbye for now

This is a sad post (for me, at least!) as I am taking a break from Trashionista. I hope to be back in the future, but desperately need to carve out some more time for my own fiction writing. That book ain't going to write itself!

I have absolutely loved working for this brilliant site and I want to say thank you to Keris for being a lovely friend and fabulous editor, and to all the wonderful readers, authors, and publishers I have encountered over the last six months. Thank you!

Introducing Keris Stainton

MeI realised that while I've been busy getting all our regular writers to introduce themselves, I hadn't actually ever introduced myself!

So, hello, I'm Keris, your friendly neighbourhood editor. Nice to meet you.

Favourite chick lit book: A toss-up between Marian Keyes' Anybody Out There? and Jennifer Weiner's In Her Shoes. I pretty much read both of them straight through and could happily reread them any time.

Favourite chick lit author: Again, a toss-up between Marian Keyes and Meg Cabot. Can't read their books fast enough. They're both so warm, natural and very funny. (And if I ever make it to Ireland or Key West, they should be afraid.)

Favourite fictional heroine: Probably Mia Thermopolis from Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series. When I was pregnant and thought I was having a girl, I was seriously thinking of naming her Mia. She's not just sweet and funny, she's a great role model. (I had a boy so didn't get to use the name.)

Favourite non chick-lit book: Nope, can't choose just one. Either Bryce Courtenay's The Power of One or Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series. Both utterly absorbing and affecting. (I dreamed about The Power of One and bunked off work to read the full Tales of the City series!)

Do you have a theme song? Embarrassingly enough, the song I find myself singing without thinking is Sweet Life by Barry Manilow

Introducing Angela Richardson

Angela is another of our regular reviewers who, for some reason, always seems to end up reviewing vampire books...

I work as a biochemist in a hospital, where creepy nights doing on call in a deserted laboratory inspired me to write supernatural novels of my own as a hobby. I’ve always loved reading and mostly read chick lit mixed with science fiction and fantasy. I also have a fetish for self-help books, and am still hoping to find ‘the one’ which will solve all my problems!

Favourite chick lit book: Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, she manages to mix fantasy, romance and action seamlessly.

Favourite chick lit author: Laurell K Hamilton. I enjoy her books, but also really admire her for the speed with which she writes them. She always has one or two new books out every year and writes several series at the same time. She’s also very feisty and says when someone tells her they’d like to write a book when they get some time she always replies ‘and I’d like to become a brain surgeon when I get some spare time’.

Favourite fictional heroine: At the moment (it changes regularly) it's Rachel Morgan from Kim Harrison’s series of books. She a witch and a bounty hunter and regularly kicks ass in a mini skirt and heels, that’s when she’s not trying to outwit demons!

Favourite non chick lit book: I have to go back to my teens for this one – I was addicted to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams for years and have re-read those books many times during my school days.

Introducing Sarah Painter

Sarah_webIf you're observant, you've probably noticed that, since Diane left Trashionista, we've had a few different reviewers. So I thought I'd introduce them. Writing for Trashi every day (along with me) is Sarah Painter.

Favourite chick lit book: Heartburn by Nora Ephron or High Fidelity by Nick Hornby.

Favourite chick lit author: This has got to Jennifer Crusie. I love her characters, her humour, and the worlds she creates. In fact, I'd like to live in one...

Favourite fictional heroine: I would find it very difficult to play favourites with a Crusie heroine, so I'm going to plump for Buffy. Yes, the vampire slayer. Yes. I am a geek.

Favourite non chick lit book: Impossible to choose just one. You have a gun? Okay, then... A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Or Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon. Or Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. Or The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett. Bang! Oops.

Do you have a theme song? I listen to music specific to the book when I'm writing - so at the moment it's lots of Elvis and Johny Cash. Theme song for real life would be Moving On Up by Primal Scream.

Thanks, Sarah!

Letter from the Editor

Me Eep. That's sounds a bit important, doesn't it? It's not. It's just me. I thought that now Diane's gone (*sob*) (except she hasn't really because she wasn't well last week so she'll be making a few more appearances as soon as she's better), I'd write a little note to let you know what's coming up and ask for some feedback.

There will be a couple of changes. Friday Flick/Monday Movie you already know about, but I'm also bringing back Movie Magic (casting imaginary films of our favourite chick lit books - because I do that so much in my head anyway) plus there'll be introductions to our regular reviewers and even more competitions.

I'd love to know what you like about Trashionista, what you don't like. What you'd like to see more of. And less of (if anything). Any ideas you have to make this site even more fantastic than it already is would be very gratefully received.

I'm very excited about being sole editor and I hope you all keep reading!

Welcome our new reviewer: Jill Hart

Jill5We've got a new regular reviewer to introduce you to. Inspirational or Christian chick lit is one of the new big sub-genres, massive in the US, but not so much in the UK. I've read one book that falls into the genre - Chocolate Beach by Julie Carobini - but it's not something I would generally seek out.

Jill Hart is the founder of Christian Work at Home Moms, CWAHM.com and the host of the internet radio shows, Christian Work at Home Moment and CWO Talk Radio. She lives in Nebraska with her husband and their two children and will our inspirational chick lit chick, so I thought I'd ask her some questions by way of introduction.

Favourite chick lit book?

The Restorer by Sharon Hinck. It's the first book in a series of inspirational fantasy chick-lit books. It's so unique and it totally captivated me. I guess I love to live in fantasy land. :)

Favourite chick lit author?

I'm not sure I can pick just one, but if you're going to make me, I'm going to go with Marilynn Griffith. Her inspirational chick-lit has powerful characters who accomplish amazing things. Her books always make me glad I'm a chick!

Favourite fictional heroine?

My favorite heroine is Freddie in Miss Invisible by Laura Jensen Walker. She is hysterically funny and inspiring as well.

Favourite non-chick lit book?

Another favorite genre of mine is historical fiction. My favorite book from this genre would have to be All The Tea In China by Jane Orcutt. Ms. Orcutt passed away recently and this book serves as a beautiful tribute to both her life and writing career.

Look out for Jill's reviews coming soon!

Summer Special!

I was going to announce this yesterday, but I ran out of time. And then I was going to wait until I'd discussed it all with my co-editor, but I can't find anything else to write about today and I've been on this computer for way too long and I really want to go and eat something so, to sum up, I'm announcing it now!

Six weeks* of summer specials here at Trashionista! Beach read recommendations. Books for different types of holidays. Plus, since not everyone's going away (or, like me, they're not going until October), suggestions for books to read *instead* of a holiday. And lots and lots of competitions.

It's going to be so good, you'll think the sun is actually shining!

*or however long it takes us to run out of ideas.

Welcome to Cult Classic Week on Trashionista!

Cultclassicweek_2Cult classics are not the classics of old (although we like those too - remember Jane Austen week?) but the classics of the not-too-distant past that instantly resonate with readers and that we know (or we hope) will be around for a long time. They may not be critically acclaimed (although sometimes they are) but readers love them.

This next week on Trashionista is officially Cult Classic Week, so you can look out for tips on chick lit classics of the future, reviews of books you already love and the unearthing of some cult classics that are a little too culty - undeservedly under-rated reads we think you'll love.

And of course, my friends, there will be competitions - oh yes! Some of our best giveaways yet., in fact. All of which is a lovely way to celebrate the fact that this week is the one-year anniversary of Keris and my induction into the Trashionista gang. What a great year it's been!

Let the cult classics roll....

Follow fashion at GFWlive.com!

Gfw_edited1We like a fashion-themed read as much as the next girl: from The Devil Wears Prada to Divas Don't Knit - clothes, chick lit and the fashion industry share a special bond, which may be why Trashionista's ed-in-chief Gemma Cartwright is also a fashion maven.

For the rest of this week, you can follow Gemma, Kim and the Catwalk Queen gang's take on Graduate Fashion Week at a specially-dedicated blog, GFWlive.com.

If you want to know what kind of clothes we'll all be wearing (and most likely, reading about) next season then head on over for all the gossip!

Devoted to all things er, crafty, you'll find everything from the inspiration to try out new crafts yourself, to information and recommendations for the more experienced 'crafter'.

The Oscars Liveblog at Catwalk Queen

amyadams2.jpg

The sofa has been plumped, the champagne lambrini is chilling in the fridge, we've got Domino's pizza on speed dial and our posh frock pajamas are ready to be donned. That's right, the second most important awards show of the week (after ours) is almost here...

On Sunday night the stars will be hitting the red carpet for the 79th Annual Academy Awards, and we'll be live blogging the whole thing as we watch it on Sky Movies (while sane people get some sleep). We can't promise witty chat about the nominated movies or an in-depth film buff guide to who'll win what...but who cares about all that anyway? On Oscars night it's all about the frocks, and as Shiny's resident Joan Rivers, I'll be doing my best to bring you news of the fabulous and the fugly as tinseltown's finest arrive at the Kodak Theatre.

Last year's liveblog was a great success, and we're hoping this year will be even better. If you've missed any of the Catwalk Queen pre-Oscars build up, see our trend predictions and catwalk picks here.

Trashionista nominated for TWO blogging awards!

Just yesterday, I was writing about Meryl Streep's award-winning ways and now Trashionista is an award-nominated site! How exciting!

We're part of the Glam network, a listing of fabulous blogs from around the world, and they've nominated us for Best Tagline ("We read books like they're going out of fashion!") and even more gratifying, Best Daily Read (where we're up against our sister site Shiny Shiny). WOO!

I don't want to be accused of soliciting votes, but I do want to say it would make our day/week/year if we won either award...

So if you're moved to vote, just get clicking right here and once you've completed the (super-quick!) sign-in process you can do so - our categories are on pages 9 and 10. Voting closes on 24 January.

So hop to it... y'know, if you want to.

No, the world hasn't turned on its axis: we're both writing about our fashion flaws! (That sounds more like it...) Keris in Small and imperfectly formed, and me? Fashion misfit, at your service...

That was the week that was!

Anyone who visited our site last week couldn't fail to have picked up on the party atmosphere! Wasn't Bafab just brilliant? We had a great time, and we hope -and suspect- you did, too! Maybe we even inspired some of you to buy a friend a book... if we did, tell us about it!

We have to thank all of our lovely readers for helping make the week such a brilliant success, as well as the Shiny team for promoting us and for answering our question "If  you could buy a friend a book, which would you choose and why?"

And of course, the week would have been nothing without Lauren Baratz-Logsted, Shanna Swendson, Hester Browne, Lily Burana, Laura Dave and Jo Elliot, our wonderful guest blogging authors, for generously writing for us AND donating a book each. PLUS, we had very generous donations from Snowbooks & Seal Press, Faber, Andrea Semple, Kathryn Finney and... I hope I haven't forgotten anybody!

You can still enter our giveaways over the next couple of days, if you were silly- I mean unlucky- enough to have passed us by last week... Check out the Bafab archives for a full list.

Here's to another great week on Trashionista this week- we may not have quite the star line-up of Bafab, but we can promise you great book news and reviews all delivered with our trademark sense of fun. So stick around!

If you win and haven't read first book Enchanted Inc. then you'll get a copy of that, and if you have, you can claim a copy of sequel Once Upon Stilettos.

To win, just email us with your name and address (so we can send the book to the winner, we won't stalk you, promise) and "Shanna" in the subject line.

and look out for Shanna's special guest blog for us later this afternoon... it's a good 'un! (as I'm sure she wouldn't say in Texas...)

You can still enter our This is Chick Lit and Wedding Belles giveaways, too.

Why MySpace?

There's a great article on Mediabistro on how authors are using MySpace both to promote their books and connect with readers. Rachel Kramer Bussel writes:

MySpace's recently-launched Books area currently ranks 551 books by popularity (read: number of MySpace blog links) under "Top Books"—at the time of this article's publication, Danse Macabre (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter) by Laurell K. Hamilton and Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada were tied at first place with 32 links each. Titles ranked on MySpace link to Amazon (via its affiliate program), while the Books area also boasts a featured book blog, highlights three genre-based book groups, and showcases five featured titles—with unattributed reviews, as well as reader comments—on the Books page.

Trashionista faves such as Meg Cabot, Karyn Bosnak and Emily Giffin have pages and now would probably be a good time to tell you that we've got one too!

The New SJP?

Lipstickjungle Since Sex and the City ended in 2003, a million new shows have been touted as "the new SATC"- and none have lived up to the promise!  But the current issue of Glamour reports on something that might have real potential: a new TV show based on Candace Bushnell's Lipstick Jungle.  Melissa George (formerly of Alias, Friends and before that, tragic Angel in Home and Away) has been busy filming the pilot in L.A.   (She's Australian but has proven she can give good accent)... Also starring is Scott Cohen, who played Max Medina in the fabulous Gilmore Girls.

Obviously no-one could replace Carrie and Big, but maybe they'll be worthy successors? (Fingers crossed!)  If you've read the book, let us know what you think: will it make good TV? What do you think of the casting?

Trashionista Recommends: Amazon extras!

If you're not a regular visitor to Amazon's American site, you may have missed out on a wonderful new gem: Amazon Fishbowl.  It's an internet-exclusive show/preview section about music, entertainment and, most especially, books!

Hosted by American comedian Bill Maher, a new 'Fishbowl' is uploaded to the site each week.  And there's lots to interest the typical Trashionista, with the most recent episode including Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher (talking about her new autobiography, Burnt Toast) and on June 22, big-time Trashionista fave Janet Evanovich was the guest of honour.  They've even featured exclusive preview clips of the hugely- anticipated film adaptation The Devil Wears Prada  in the past.  (To my huge excitement!)

The show's released every Thursday night, which means we Brits can catch it on the site's main page every Friday, via amazon.com.  Or, you can check out the jam-packed, fun-filled archives at your leisure here.  (What are you waiting for?!)

Changes at Trashionista

You will have noticed that our updates have been a bit sporadic over recent months, but not any more! It's time for some changes here at Trashionista. As of this week, I'm handing over the reigns to a new editor, giving me more time to ramble on and on about shoes, bags and other fashion stuff.

From now on, Trashionista will be looked after Jenni Nock, who is the site's longest standing contributor. As well as the usual book reviews, she'll also be introducing loads of new content and weekly columns. I won't spoil the surprise, but I spent a week discussing ideas with her and I think our final choices are fabulous.

I'll still be contributing to the site from time to time, and Jenni would love to hear from other potential guest reviewers. If you think you'd like to be a Trashionista, get in touch with her at editor@trashionista.com. Remember we're all about women's fiction here at Trashionista. It doesn't need to be straight chick lit, but it has to be aimed primarily at us ladies!

Thanks to all of you for your support so far. I know you'll love Jenni as much as I do! [Gemma]

A Very Shiny Birthday

Shinymedia
Shiny Media celebrates its first anniversary today with the news that November is on target to be our biggest and best month so far. Across our network of 14 blogs we look set to record 1.5 million page impressions in 30 days, over 1 million of them unique visitors.

But that’s not all. In the latest Google page rankings – a measure by which higher quality sites receive a higher score - our sites have all performed exceptionally well. Shiny Shiny – the world’s leading girls’ gadget blog – is the only UK consumer electronics website to have a ranking of 7/10 for its home page. That’s higher than T3, Crave (CNet), Pocket-Lint and Stuff.

This Thursday also sees the return of the Telewest Shiny Awards in which readers and top industry journalists decide on the best and worst gadgets on the market. Thanks for all your support in making this last 12 months so exciting. And look out for new launches from the rapidly expanding Shiny Media network over the next few months.

Be A Trashionista!

Think you could be a Trashionista? We love our chick lit, but not even we can read quickly enough to write a worthwhile review a day! So that's where you come in. Do you think you can write an objective, interesting and snappy review of a women's fiction novel? Then why not have a go? Send in your reviews to us and we'll post the best ones on the site and you'll see your name in lights.

Your review needs to follow the usual Trashionista format (Less than 500 words, with an introductory paragraph and a rating out of five) and be emailed to us in the email, not as an attachment. Don't forget to leave your name so we can credit you. And please, don't give away the plot!

Send your reviews to editor@trashionista.com, and don't forget to tell us a bit about yourself while you're at it!

Calling all budding Trashionistas...

WrimoThink you can do better than the majority of chick lit writers out there? Now's your chance. November is National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo for short - and the challenge is to bash out 50,000 words before the end of the month. Since I spend so much of my time criticising those who've already been published, I decided to give this a whirl and see just how terrible my offering turns out, and I challenge all you to do the same! It'll mean writing around 2000 words a day - give or take - and at the end if you think yours is any good, send it in to us and we promise to give you a full-on Trashionista review! If you're lucky (and I'm not too embarrassed) I might post mine for you lot to review too.

Changes to Trashionista

Thanks to everyone who's commented on Trashionista so far. We love hearing your comments so please keep them coming! We've acted on your ideas and have now added a ratings system to the blog. Every book we review will be given a mark out of five, listed in the categories at the bottom of the review (meaning you can also search by rating using the links to your left). We try to be as generous as we can, so expect those 0/5 books to be seriously terrible, while 5/5 books are a great read, but not necessarily booker prize winners!

Fashionable Chick Lit at the Movies

FashionChick flick fans, we've news on the film versions of two fashion-themed novels for you. Firstly, the big screen adaptation of Lynn Messina's 'Fashionistas' has been in pre-production for ages. Originally Lindsay Lohan was cast to play the lead role of Vig, despite being a) nothing like the character and b) far too young. Rumours were rife that the film would bear very little resemblance to the book (which in this case is not necessarily a bad thing), but Lohan is no longer in the running and production seems to have come to a halt. This could well be because a far superior rival, The Devil Wears Pradathe adaptation of the bitchy look at the world of the glossies written by Anna Wintour's ex assistant Lauren Weisberger, is now filming. This one has a stellar cast, including Meryl Streep as the Wintour-esque Miranda Priestley, and Anne 'Princess Diaries' Hathaway as her long-suffering assistant Andrea. Eye candy comes courtesy of Adrien 'The Entourage' Grenier and Aussie actor Simon Baker. I can't wait!

About Trashionista

Trashionista is a Shiny Media website created by Gemma Cartwright and edited by Keris Stainton.

Trashionista gets to grips with the wonderful world of female fiction. We take an unbiased look at beach reads, bestsellers, new releases and old favourites - and we actually read the books before writing about them. At Trashionista we don't believe that 'chick lit' is a dirty word - but if a book is trash, we'll let you know!
