Matthews guest posting at Trashionista as part of her Summer Daydreams blog
tour! Summer Daydreams is out on 24th May, and here Carole shares
her experiences of writing the book, in which heroine Nell decides to start a
business designing handbags.

To celebrate, Little, Brown are holding a fantastic

From Tiny Acorns -
How Books Can Creep Up on You

Research for novels can take on all kinds of forms. Usually
it starts with a great idea for a book which requires some knowledge that I
don't already have. So off I go to find
out about it. My current fetish for baking cupcakes was spawned from an idea
that I might one day write a book heavily featuring the excessive consumption
of cupcakes. Until, of course, the lovely Jenny Colgan beat me to it with her
novel Meet Me at The Cupcake Cafe.
Drat and double drat. I still bake cupcakes though.

Sometimes
a book might require more extreme
research. My next-but-one Christmas book -due out in 2013 - has recently involved a
trip to Swedish Lapland. I spent a week on a variety of activities including
dogsledding, snowmobiling, building an igloo and staying at the Ice Hotel. All in minus 35 degrees. Brrr. Sometimes I do
suffer for my art.

But, for
my latest novel - Summer Daydreams -
the research was much closer to home and didn't involve me getting cold or up close
and personal with a husky once. It was more of a slow builder.

The idea
for my future Christmas book hit me like a hammer blow and my outline was written
and the trip was booked within a week. Yet,
with Summer Daydreams, it wasn't for
literally years that I realised there was a story sitting right in front of me,
just waiting to be written.

It all started
some time ago when a status photograph
of Barbara Cartland popped up on my Facebook page. Assuming it belonged to another romance
writer, I pootled along to check out the page. As it turned out, the owner
wasn't a writer, but the lovely Helen Rochfort - a designer of totally gorgeous
pop art handbags. Suitably impressed, I posted an admiring message. The next
day she posted one back to say thank you and that she was going to read one of
my books. There started, in a small and rather unexpected way, a friendship
that has since blossomed.

We chatted
back and forth for a while and then Helen designed some promotional handbags
for one of my earlier books - The
Chocolate Lovers' Club - and we ended up spending more time together.

Over lunch
one day, Helen told me how she'd become a designer. It was a tough road and,
from humble beginnings, is now a very successful designer who has had handbags
in Harrods and Harvey Nicks! Her story is just amazing and she juggles the life
of a glamorous designer with managing two children and a home. One minute she's
at the Paris Fashion Week, the next at home reading bedtime stories to her two
girls. It was a book just waiting to be written.

So, we've
worked quite closely together over the last year or so to bring the story to
life. The result is Summer Daydreams. It's a lovely tale and is loosely based on
Helen's life and experiences. So I hope that it has a genuine ring of
authenticity. I think you'll really warm to the character in the book, Nell
McNamara - she's a strong, feisty woman who steps out of her comfort zone to
make a better life for her and her family. it's a story that a lot of women
will love and find familiar. So many women these days in demanding jobs and are
also trying to juggle their home life too.

So, the
research for this book was slow and gentle. So much so that I didn't actually
realise I was doing it! The book sort of sneaked up on me. A lot of it involved
just hanging out with Helen and her husband, Julian, who also works in her
business. No pain there.

Driving a
team of huskies was most of the most exciting things I've ever done. But
getting to play with a lot of handbags in the name of research was pretty good
too. And telling the story of my friend's success was even better.

You can find out more about Carole and her books over at her website, or by following Carole on Twitter.

The book was released last week and we couldn't wait to put our questions to Trisha, who also brought us Chocolate Wishes and The Magic of Christmas. Read on to find out more about the novel, and Trisha's chick-lit favourites!

Please describe your book in 15 words or fewer.

Cinderella's taken charge of the slippers and Prince Brooding had better beware!

What inspired you to write Chocolate Shoes and Wedding Blues?

I was born in a room over a shoe shop, so I naturally grew up with the heady smell of leather and a love of shoes. My inspiration came from my mother, who bravely started up her own shoe shop in the difficult post-war years and, with hard work and determination, built it into a thriving business. The heroine's great aunt Nan is very much in the same mould.

Where do you do most of your writing?

I recently moved house, so have tried out two rooms as my office and am in the process of relocating to the one I started off in...

When I'm not at home I can write on my little netbook: once upon a time, I used to lug a portable typewriter around with me, so I suppose that's progress. I liked my typewriter, though, the keys clacking away in time to my thoughts.

What is your favourite book?

Among my own, Every Woman for Herself, my contemporary take on the Bronte family, though I also loved writing the historical 'story within a story' for A Winter's Tale, so that one would be a close second.

I love so many authors that it would be impossible to choose one as a favourite. To mention only a few, I have everything Susan Hill has written and adore her Serailler detective series; I read and re-read all Marika Cobbold's books; I have all the Carol O'Connell Mallory crime books: I was blown away by the grand scale of Leah Fleming's new book, The Captain's Daughter... I could go on and on - it's just impossible to pick only one! And that's without starting on the huge list of books that defined a part of my life, like Paradise Lost, Catch-22 or Ted Hughes' The Hawk in the Rain...or books I'm so glad I read, but don't want to read again, like The Colour Purple and The Poisonwood Bible.

Which part of Chocolate Shoes and Wedding Blues was the most fun to write?

I had a lot of fun describing Flash, the Border collie in the novel, who is a less neurotic version of the rescue dog foisted onto me over a year ago by my student son. I changed the name so he won't sue me. This is also why I refer to him by his title, Dog, on twitter and Facebook, rather than his real name.

What are you currently reading?

I am only reading research books currently, but during the last couple of weeks I've read: Michael Arditti's The Enemy of Good, Deborah Moggach's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Marika Cobbold's Guppies for Tea (this was a re-read, because I kept thinking of it all the way through the Marigold Hotel book), Elizabeth Buchan's Daughters and JoJo Moyes Me Before You.

Who is your favourite heroine?

If you mean, the favourite heroine from one of my own books, I love all my children equally. As to other authors, I adore Amelia Peabody from Elizabeth Peter's books.

Do you have any tips for readers who are looking to become published authors?

I got to this point by the traditional route - working hard at my writing all my life and following my star. There are now alternative routes into getting published and for those starting out now who are tempted to put their work straight out as an ebook, I'd say get it independently edited, because although you may think your first baby is perfect, everyone else will see the all the little defects...and even the glaring ones. Take on board the constructive criticism of the editor and rewrite before publishing - get it as whole and perfect as you can make it. The market is flooded with novels, but cream will rise to the top - just make sure yours is cream and not a sachet of the white synthetic liquid they give you with your coffee on trains.

Are you working on anything else at the moment, and if so, can you tell us?

I'm writing a new book for next year, which I'm very excited about, but I'm not going to talk about it just yet, except to say it's set in the same village as Chocolate Shoes and Wedding Blues. After that, I'm decamping back to one of the other villages in my books, to see what my characters have been up to in my absence.

Thanks, Trisha!

You can find out more about Trisha over at her website and the Trisha Ashley Facebook fan page.
This fortnight publishers Total-E-Bound
are back and posing the question: What drives erotic authors? TEB author
Morticia Knight explores...

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-theme-font:

When I was growing up, sweet and sensual
romances were what women liked to read. Bookseller shelves were filled with
women authors who wrote dreamy and wistful love stories where men who could
easily double for Prince Charming swept virginal beauties off their feet. They made passionate love and the term
"purple prose" was invented to indicate when an author used a flowery euphemism
to convey a steamy moment between lovers. In order not to offend a woman's
delicate sensibilities, one would never use the actual slang word for a man's
"throbbing member", or a woman's "hot love sheath". But that was then, and this
is now. Erotica and erotic romance is the number one selling genre for e-readers.
There are many theories for this, the main one being that women feel that they
can indulge without anyone knowing the subject matter of what they're reading.
Even more interesting to me though, is that the vast majority of erotic
romance, even gay erotic romance, is written by female authors. So what would
drive a woman to become an erotic author?

Maggie Nash (Total-E-Bound author of The Master's Prize and others) says, "Writing erotic romance wasn't my first
choice for writing, but once I started I couldn't stop. It's addictive!" I know
exactly what she means. It is addicting. For me, it's been the opportunity to
just let go and not have any restrictions on my writing, or on my characters.
If you're writing in other literary genres, many times the explicitness of a
sex scene may have to be toned down in order to be deemed acceptable. Even if
it feels right for your characters to go in a very extreme sexual direction,
unless you're writing erotica or erotic romance, it's likely you won't include
it in your story. Maggie goes on further to say, "There's always a different
way to express fantasies and using erotic romance, you can use it as a great
tool for character development. If the characters aren't changed by the
intensity of the erotic scene, then it's not working. I find this challenging,
but empowering at the same time."

Maggie brings up another good point:
erotic romance is empowering for women. I believe that's a big part of why this
is such a popular genre choice for women, as readers and writers. When you're
writing with no boundaries, you are able to free yourself creatively in a way
I've never experienced with other genres of fiction. There is nothing more
empowering than that. Yet at times, erotic romance has been accused of being anything
but that; it has basically been lambasted as nothing but porn dressed up with a
pretty ribbon. I think this is an uninformed blanket statement. Total-E-Bound
author Chris Lange (Gabriel), states
that, "To tell a love story true, a romance writer must bare hearts, souls, and bodies." Sex happens folks!

I predict a very near future where the
lines will blur more and more between what is considered mainstream romance and
what is considered erotic romance. The last decade has already seen mainstream
romances get steamier and more explicit, and with the unexpected success of the
BDSM themed trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey,
(also written by a woman) the erotic romance trade is poised for an even bigger
surge in offerings. I know of many of my
fellow authors, including myself, who look at the popularity of that series and
think, "Hey - I have a book (s) already out there that is very similar to that
one. Does this mean I might land on bestseller lists as well?" This is great
news for the women writing erotica, but it is also fantastic news for the fans.
Readers will have better access to more erotica and erotic romances than ever
before.

Finally, the best way to find out what drives
a woman to write erotic romance, is to try one for yourself. At Total-E-Bound,
there is an enormous variety to choose from, and even if you're feeling a
little tame at first, there's a sexometer and a burn rating to help you decide
just how far you want to go. Or, if you've read one type already, maybe
consider exploring a different category. Have you ever thought about what it's
like for people trying to have a serious, committed, happily-ever-after if they
are in a ménage relationship? Might I
suggest the new ménage anthology, All
Together Now, just released at TEB. It features six different stories of
ménage romance, including mine, "The Perfect Third". While you're there, look
at some of the other genres, and maybe find out what's driving you.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-theme-font:

Let me just say that I'm never usually attracted to celebrity novels. In fact, it usually takes me a bit of convincing to voluntarily read one. It's not that I'm against celebrity reads, but I remain a little unconvinced, what with countless tales of ghostwriters (Jordan's many novels, anyone?), quite often making us speculate if the book deal would have been gained at all if the writer wasn't already a household name. (C'mon, we're all thinking it!)

That said, Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly's new novel grabbed my interest when I received the paperback copy in the mail. Released in April (the hardback was originally released in October last year), The Camera Never Lies is a glitzy tale about an aspiring model-slash-presenter who's catapulted to celebrity status. Which does sound a liiiittle familiar. Tess herself was previously a model before becoming a well-known TV star, but of course, it's always best to write about what you know! And Tess does this extremely well.

Britt Baxter is a twenty-something model, struggling to find her big break in London alongside her loving boyfriend Alex. However, despite the competitive industry, Britt's determined, and when it seems as though her luck has come to an end, a stint at waitressing surprisingly lands her a dream job - as a presenter on a popular breakfast TV show.

Britt can't believe her luck - and it doesn't take long before she's a household star. Using her talent and quick thinking, she's an instant success, much to the annoyance of older co-star Cherry who feels as though she's being thrust out of the limelight. Even more so when Britt and her on-camera 'relationship' with gorgeous co-presenter Josh Bailey are hitting the headlines on a daily basis.

Sadly, others aren't taking Britt's rise to fame so positively. Before long, the tabloids are awash with rather unsavoury stories about Britt. Her relationship with Alex is in tatters, and worse still, it seems as though someone close by is out to sabotage Britt's career. Can she find out who's behind it all before it's too late?

I must admit, when I first picked up this book I didn't expect it to be as enjoyable as it actually was. Tales of everyday girls becoming celebrities are hardly that original anymore, and I figured it would be an enjoyable yet average read. However, I was wrong. Tess Daly's fictional offering, although a light read (I finished it in one sitting) will keep you guessing all the way through. To top it off, Britt is a loveable Northern girl who doesn't let the fame get to her head, with great friends and family who make this story even more fun. It gives a general insight into the world of breakfast TV, with plenty of added glamour. Britt's adventure is wonderfully written and addictive, and if Tess did write this without the aid of a ghostwriter, then she's one talented writer on top of everything else. Am I jealous? Maybe! But one thing's for certain: The Camera Never Lies is one wonderful guilty pleasure!

Rating: 5/5

Like this? Well, Strings Attached came out in November 2011 and since then I have been doing a bit of a UK tour of Waterstones stores, promoting the novel and getting out and meeting my readers. Waterstones have been so supportive of me and this book and I am really grateful to them for having me take over their shops for the day!

In January this year I submitted a manuscript to a handful of publishers and had a great response from the majority of them. I then had to decide whether I really wanted to sign with someone or whether I wanted to stay self-published for this next book. It was a really hard decision but, what finally persuaded me to sign with someone, was the enthusiasm shown by new US fiction publishers Sapphire Star Publishing. They fell in love with the manuscript and their overwhelming response to the story had me reaching for the pen and autographing that contract!

Can you tell us more about your latest book?

Yes!! My next novel is called Taking Charge and this is a story about Robyn Matthers, an American-born twenty-something who has been living in the UK for the last nine years. She returns to the US when her father has a heart attack and, as well as the fond memories she has about the place she grew up, there are also reasons why she's fearful of coming back. On the plane ride she meets a very hot, very intelligent, very lovely ice-hockey player called Cole Ryan - but is he all that he seems?

Once in Michigan, Robyn has to revamp her dad's roadhouse, manage the local ice hockey team and dodge the advances of an ex-boyfriend. There are quite a few skeletons in closets in this book - but then it wouldn't be a Mandy Baggot novel without a few surprises!

Here's the Taking Charge trailer to whet your appetite! You can also interact with the lead male Cole Ryan who has his own Twitter account @coleryan22. He's been chatting with the ladies already.

What are you reading at the moment?

At the moment I am reading Michelle Betham's 'Too Much Trouble in Paradise' - it's a great book about Tenerife, darts and relationships. There are some great characters in it and Michelle has a brilliant writing style.

Are there any authors who have inspired you?

I hate to suck up to my friends but here we go! Talli Roland is a bit of an inspiration. She's done a fantastic job of marketing herself and her books and she's got everything just right. She's shown everyone that you don't always need the backing of a major publisher to get your books selling well.

In terms of actual writing, I'm an original! I write as I see things and definitely have my own style!

What kind of research did you do for your latest novel?

I had no idea I was going to write this book! I went to visit my dad in America for what I thought was going to be a 10 night holiday. Then the Icelandic volcano erupted and we were marooned in Michigan for additional 11 nights! It gave me plenty of time to get a real sense of the community in Portage and it enabled me to create my characters and set my scene. Well, once I'd been to the ice hockey, the storyline just progressed from there.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I enjoyed developing Robyn and Cole's characters and their interaction with each other. It takes time before your characters are really three dimensional and real I think. They start off a bit like flat-packed people and then as the story grows and you get to know them and their responses to situations, they get flesh on their bones and a heart and soul. There are two scenes in the book where, whenever I read them, I cry. That hasn't happened to me before.

What are you working on next? (If you can tell us of course!)

I actually don't know! I have three novels burning away in the background right now, all very different. I just need to decide which one to concentrate my efforts on. Perhaps I should ask Sapphire Star which one they would be most interested in signing up!

Thanks, Mandy!

Mandy will be over at Books Are My Life tomorrow for her next blog tour stop.
