MOVIE NEWS: Vampires Suck

vampiressuck.jpgUnless you've been deprived of all media over the past year or two, you'll know that the vampire craze still seems to be going strong. With Eclipse, the third instalment of the Twilight saga, having just hit our screens , it seems that we're divided into two camps. (And no, NOTHING to do with Edward or Jacob!) There are vampire fans aplenty who seemingly don't want the craze to ever end. And then there's the rest of us, who are living in hope that one day, it'll all die down.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good vampire book (and flick!) and even with the plethora of fiction delving into the lives of teenage vamps and werewolves, there are some hidden gems. But isn't it getting just a little bit tiresome?

Thankfully, upcoming movie Vampires Suck is hopefully set to get rid of some of our vampire-related annoyance. The film, which will hit the UK big screen  on 15th October, parodies hit flicks Twilight. It sees teenager Becca torn between two boys. Here's the synopsis:

Vampires Suck is a comedy about contemporary teen angst and romance movies. Becca, and anxious, non-vampire teen, is torn between two boys. Before she can choose, Becca must get around her controlling father, who embarrasses her by treating her like a child. Meanwhile, Becca's friends contend with their own romantic issues - all of which collide at the prom.

The trailer is absolutely hilarious - CLICK HERE TO VIEW!

Just as soon as she has one last teensy-weensy little fling.

Then comes the dicey issue of the guest list. First there's Nat, Faye's ex--a narcissistic fashion model hell-bent on flaunting his substantial charms in Faye's face, his latest Playboy bunny in tow. Next there's Kate, Mark's ex--a woman so indignant she's not the bride that she's liable to slit Faye's zipper. And, of course, there's Adam, Faye's flamboyant sidekick, milking the chaos for all it's worth while shamelessly ogling Nat's abs. As the rehearsal dinner lurches toward the brink of a spin-the-bottle-fueled imbroglio, Faye must face the fact that marriage means more than a flawlessly executed reception. She's got a serious decision to make--about Mark, about love, and about her own deepest desires.

Wickedly funny, The Ex Files is a sexy, sophisticated caper that offers a brazenly edgy take on the complexities of the modern bride.

According to ComingSoon, Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro are attached to star in the upcoming book-based rom-com.

Not familiar with the book? Here's the synopsis (via Amazon/Publisher's Weekly):

Melanie Banks, wedded to her job as a financial planner and freshly divorced from former football star Dan Swain, hates writing him that monthly alimony check, which he spends on Cristal and Gucci moccasins as he languishes in their fancy apartment, while she must settle for dingier digs. Since he's sworn off remarriage and a new career, nursing old injuries to his knee and his pride, Melanie's only out is a bit of legal fine print: if Dan shacks up with a woman for 90 days, he forfeits his right to Melanie's money.

Her scheme to find him his ideal woman works all too well: Dan falls for a vixen veterinarian, invites her to move in and shapes up into the man who first stole Melanie's heart. Catastrophically obsessed with the new couple and hell-bent on winning Dan back, Melanie lets her work slide and deflects the advances of her heartthrob neighbor.

MOVIE NEWS: Eat, Pray, Love

eat-pray-love.jpgThe trailer for Eat, Pray, Love - the big screen adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir - has finally been released!

The movie will star Julia Roberts as a journalist who sets out to change her life after a divorce. You can view the trailer here (and find out more about the movie) at the official movie website.

Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

If you aren't familiar with Eat, Pray, Love, here's the synopsis of the book:

It's 3 a.m. and Elizabeth Gilbert is sobbing on the bathroom floor. She's in her thirties, she has a husband, a house, they're trying for a baby - and she doesn't want any of it. A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance. So she travels to Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains twenty-five pounds, an ashram in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor, and Bali where a toothless medicine man of indeterminate age offers her a new path to peace: simply sit still and smile. And slowly happiness begins to creep up on her.

Delilah Darling's magic number was supposed to be twenty. She always thought she'd find the perfect guy by the time she'd slept with twenty of them. But when she wakes up naked in her disgusting boss's bed after a drunken night out, she's filled with regret -- and realizes she's hit her self-imposed limit. Unwilling to up her number but unable to imagine a life of celibacy, Delilah does what any girl in her situation would do: she tracks down every man she's ever slept with in a last-ditch effort to make it work with one of them.

COVER NEWS: Movie tie-ins

lovelybonesmovie.jpgpercyacksonmovie.jpgAs you're all probably aware, The Lovely Bones - the movie adaptation of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel - has hit the big screen, starring Saoirse Ronan, Susan Sarandon and Mark Wahberg. And with movie adaptations come fab tie-in editions of the original titles. Here's The Lovely Bones with the movie book jacket.

Also, Rick Riordan's children's novel Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief has also had a new cover design to celebrate the recent movie release. Here's the new cover (right). What do you think?

If you haven't yet read The Lovely Bones, click below to read a synopsis:
On her way home from school on a snowy December day, 14-year-old Susie Salmon is lured into a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer. The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold's haunting and heartbreaking debut novel, unfolds from heaven, where "life is a perpetual yesterday" and where Susie narrates and keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working on her case.

As Sebold fashions it, everyone has his or her own version of heaven. Susie's resembles the athletic fields and landscape of a suburban high school: a heaven of her "simplest dreams", where "there were no teachers... We never had to go inside except for art class... The boys did not pinch our backsides or tell us we smelled; our textbooks were Seventeen and Glamour and Vogue".

The Lovely Bones works as an odd yet affecting coming-of-age story. Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging to the lost world of the living, following her family's dramas over the years. Her family disintegrates in their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer, her mother withdraws, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new hole in his family and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milestone events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Susie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on earth as "like an accident--a beautiful gasoline rainbow."

MOVIE NEWS: Stephanie Meyer's The Host

stephaniemeyer.jpgWith the Twilight movie adaptation being a huge hit (and sequel New Moon is set to hit theaters on November 20), it comes as no surprise that Stephanie Meyer's adult novel, The Host, is also on its way to the big screen.

According to the Guardian film blog, sci-fi novel The Host is 'a love triangle involving two bodies. In a near future in which Earth has been overrun by alien body-snatchers, one of their number is fused with a dying woman in an attempt to track down the planet's last remaining human resistance. However, complications ensue when the alien finds herself falling in love with the human's missing mate.'

And Stephanie herself will be involved in the movie. "We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions," said producer Nick Wechsler. "Twilight has proven she knows more about what works than most."

The Twilight adaptation was a worldwide hit, taking in £233m.

MOVIE NEWS: Lost in Austen - the movie!

Lostinausten Yes, Lost in Austen is being remade as a feature film!  If you didn't catch this ITV1 miniseries, it was a charming culture-clash romp where a contemporary Austen fan (played by Jemima Rooper) discovers that the bathroom in her flat is a gateway into the world of Pride and Prejudice.  A sort of Narnia story for grown-up ladies.  And perhaps a few gentlemen.

Now Hollywood - presumably having run out of originals to remake - are adapting this twist-on-the-original for the silver screen.

But unlike many big screen "reimaginings", Lost in Austen is unlikely to be tarred with the "wacky" brush. Original writer Guy Andrews is penning the screenplay, and Sam Mendes, who won an Oscar for directing American Beauty (and who is married to corset-aficionado Kate Winslet) is set to produce.

Of course, none of this guarantees that it won't be Americanised or sensationalised, but we here at Trashionista are awaiting more news with bated breath.

More anti-Becky Bloomwood blogging as we head towards the Shopaholic movie release

Shopaholicthumb430x303

Shiny Style has a few issues with the costumes for the long-awaited Shopaholic movie. As most of you will know by now, not only has Becky Bloomwood been made American for the film (albeit played by an Aussie) she's also been turned into Carrie Bradshaw on acid as far as clothing is concerned.

With the books so well-loved, it seems a shame that Becky's been changed almost beyond recognition (though I do love Isla Fisher). Why the need to over-style her to the point of the ridiculous? Surely Becky was crazy enough?

And still the love affair between Mr Sparks and Hollywood is not over. Yet another of his novels, The Lucky One, is now being adapted after Warner Bros. snapped up the rights. It was published just a few weeks ago. [via Empire] See over the cut to see what it is all about.

The Lucky One tells the story of Logan Thibault, a Marine who survives three tours in Iraq. He attributes his good fortune to a photograph he carried of a woman he has never met, and he sets out to meet his good-luck charm when he returns to North Carolina.

Those SATC Sequel Rumours

SexandthecityI know, I know, I'm back again with more Sex And The City news...but I feel it is my job, no my duty, to let you all know what is happening as soon as I hear it myself. Last week I told you that Kim Cattrall had confirmed that a sequel will commence filming next summer. However...

SJP, busy with her Washingtonienne project, has poured a teeny tiny bit of cold water over Kim's comments. She has said, I’m thrilled to know Kim is excited but all the deals are not yet done. With ‘"the wind on our heels," we hope to make it a reality. [via Pop Sugar]

It's not a no, though.

MOVIE NEWS: Alice In Wonderland - the cast

We've already told you that Tim Burton was shooting a film of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, but over the last few weeks news of the cast have been announced so I thought I'd summarise.

As you might expect from a Tim Burton film, both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will be appearing. Johnny as the Mad Hatter and Helena as the Red Queen. The White Queen is to be played by Anne Hathaway and Matt Lucas (one half of Little Britain comedy duo) will be Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Frances de la Tour is rumoured to be Aunt Imogen and Michael Sheen also apparently starring.

41tyq6er5hl_sl500_aa240_No, it's not chick lit (not by any stretch of the imagination). So why am I telling you about it? Two words...

George. Clooney.

Yes, he's making yet another movie based on a book.

Details of the book over the cut.

Why are Iraqi prisoners of war being forced to listen to Barney the Purple Dinosaur's theme tune repeatedly, at top volume? Why have 100 de-bleated goats been secretly placed inside the Special Forces command centre at Fort Bragg, North Carolina? Has the US army really enlisted the help of Uri Geller? In "The Men Who Stare at Goats", Jon Ronson searches for answers to these and many other questions, revealing some of the extraordinary beliefs at the core of the War on Terror.

MOVIE NEWS: Coraline

51mykbzsrl_sl500_aa240_I read Neil Gaiman's book, Coraline, a few years ago and it scared me. I should've known, because the blurb included the words "buttons for eyes" and that is *way* scary, but I went ahead and read it anyway. And now there's a movie on the way. I won't be seeing it, but it sounds good.

A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better - but when her adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home – and save her family.

It stars the ubiquitous Dakota Fanning as Coraline and Teri Hatcher, along with the voices of Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Interesting.

SexandthecityWith no definite word yet that there will be a second Sex and the City movie after the huge success of the first, you may be excited to know that the DVD of the film is coming out very shortly. It will be released on 22 September in the UK and 23 September in the US. I, for one, am beyond excited and have already watched season six (again) in preparation.

MOVIE NEWS: Dear John - UPDATED!

Amanda_seyfriedMale, romance author Nicholas Sparks is having another of his novels adapted for the big screen. Amanda Seyfried from Mamma Mia! The Movie is to star opposite Channing Tatum in the story about a soldier, re-enlisting after September 11th, who gets a Dear John letter from his girlfriend.

Nicholas's previous novels that were adapted into films include The Notebook, Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember.

Update: Rather spookily I've just seen that The Notebook (starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling) will be shown on Channel 4 on Sunday night at 10pm.

MOVIE NEWS: Fear of Flying

Fearofflying91108It's YEARS since I read Erica Jong's Fear of Flying and I actually thought there already was a film, but apparently not. Diane English, who adapted the forthcoming film The Women (which, I'm sorry, looks TERRIBLE), is working on it.

English apparently wants Kate Winslet for the role of Isadora Wing, but the Jezebel writers (and commenters) aren't so sure, overwhelmingly voting for Maggie Gyllenhaal (who, frankly, I would watch in pretty much anything).

What do you think? Have you read the book? Will you see the film? Who do you see as Isadora Wing?

Then She Found Me Trailer

Thenshefoundmeposter1Helen Hunt directs and stars in this adaptation of Elinor Lipman's novel, Then She Found Me. (Elinor Lipman is a huge favourite of ex-Trashi Editor, Diane Shipley). The film, described as a bittersweet romcom, also stars Bette Midler, Colin Firth and Matthew Broderick.

It is out in the US on DVD, but in the UK it will be in cinemas from 19 September. Carry on over the cut to see the trailer.

Confessions of a Shopaholic - THE TRAILER!

ShopaholicOkay, okay, you can watch the trailer over the cut... but before you skip on over, let me ask one thing...

Did we know that Becky was going to be American? (Although at the end she says something like, "You're the reason I left England" so it's possible it's supposed to be an English accent... Apparently it's Finland, not England. I think I was so busy noticing what was wrong, I missed all the jokes!)

Can't wait to hear what you all think of it, so comment with abandon!

Ballet_shoes3The gorgeous adaptation, shown last Christmas in the UK, of Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild is now coming to the big screen in the US. It stars Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Emilia Fox, Marc Warren, Victoria Wood, Gemma Jones and Richard Griffiths. I loved the book, thought the film a great adaptation, so for those of you stateside do keep an eye out for it.

511h9vat9wl_sl500_aa240_I'm puzzled. Apparently, Hilary Swank has bought the rights to Mireille Guiliano's French Women Don't Get Fat with the idea of turning it into a romantic comedy.

Er, how? I've read it and, while I found it interesting, it's not a romantic comedy. I suppose, at a stretch, it could be considered in part a memoir since Guiliano includes lots of anecdotes about her own life, but I still would never have seen it as a film. [via BuzzSugar]

MOVIE NEWS: He's Just Not That Into You

Jennifer_aA few months ago we posted the trailer of this forthcoming movie. Now I can tell you, quite excitedly, that it'll be released at the end of October.

The film, starring Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly and Drew Barrymore, is based on the book by writing duo Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo concerning the ever-widening gap between genders and the misunderstandings that often arise between couples.

Did you know that the title is based on that memorable episode in Sex and The City when Miranda overheard a conversation between two women who were analysing why a man hadn't called and said, "He's just not that into you"?

There's no such thing as an original idea

I did already know that, but last night, at the cinema, I was surprised to see the trailer for Emma Roberts' new film, Wild Child. I recently read Carmen Reid's first book for young adults, Secrets at St Jude's: New Girl. Here's the synopsis:
51qbph5eiwl_sl500_aa240_
Gina's mother is fed up with her staying out late, spending too much money on clothes and too much time IM-ing her friends. But her solution to sort out her wayward LA IT girl is pretty drastic - she's sending Gina to Scotland to go to the same boarding school she attended. Suddenly taken from a world of malls, mobile phones, en-suite wet-rooms, designer clothes and sophisticated boys, Gina is suddenly forced to find her way through games of hockey, communal meals and showers, horrible public schoolboys and stuffy housemistresses.

Will she ever survive? Her dorm buddies might just help - they're a strange bunch but they seem to be good fun ...And there are always the boys from the local school to help keep them entertained.

Now carry on over the cut for the Wild Child trailer.

Spooky, no?

By the way, if you haven't seen Mamma Mia yet, I've got six words for you: Colin Firth. Wet white shirt. Again.

MOVIE NEWS: Harry split into two

Goblet_of_fireHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book, will be split into two parts in the film version. It is said to be impossible to cram all 608 pages of the book into one film.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is due out in November 2010 and Part 2 in May 2011. As a huge fan myself I think this is a great idea. It means the magic will continue a little longer and I do like to see as much of the book as possible in the film.

The decision, however, has been met with some cynicism. After all double the film means double the profit for the studios. As Daniel Radcliffe explained though in the Los Angeles Times, the seventh novel doesn't have any subplots that could be cut. "It's one driving, pounding story from the word go."

MOVIE NEWS: Prince Caspian

Caspian3It had completely escaped my notice that the sequel to The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, is to be released in June (where have I been?). The film is based on the fourth of the Chronicles of Narnia books (I'm talking chronological order here rather than publication order). It is the Pevensie children's second trip to Narnia, where they discover over a thousand years have passed since they were last there and an evil King has usurped the throne. The rightful ruler is Prince Caspian and together they set out to save Narnia.

The film sees the return of Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan and also includes the voices of David Walliams and Eddie Izzard. Prince Caspian, I should point out, is played by Ben Barnes who played young Dunstan Thorn in Stardust.

MOVIE NEWS: Wuthering Heights

Michael_fassbender2_2Following news on Trashionista last week about an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, we have now come across the news that there will be a new version of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights to be filmed.

Natalie Portman was going to star as Cathy but she has dropped out due to other commitments. Heathcliff is tipped to be Michael Fassbender (I had to look him up) an Irish-German actor who has starred in 300 and The Real Life of Angel Deverell. I have never heard of him or his films, but still, I think the photograph of him demonstrates the passionate and dark side of Heathcliff's nature. Does it not? [Via Empire]

Remember when we asked if chick lit was bad for your love life...?

Well, it's not just us! Look!

Mr. Right . . . is Stuck in Traffic is a one hour documentary that investigates the impact "chick flicks" and "chick lit" have on real-life love. Using humorous re-enactments, film clips, interviews, animation and social experiments we'll explore whether chick culture is harmless fun or a ruthless relationship saboteur.

Best-selling authors Marian Keyes (Anybody Out There?) and Jane Green (Second Chance), relationship expert Dr. Michelle (The Today Show & Tyra) and many others will share their thoughts on nasty cases of "inflated expectations" and possible cures for this pop culture pandemic.

It's apparently currently in post-production. I'll keep a look out for it and let you know if I ever get to see it (and of course, feel free to tell us all about it if you see it first).

MOVIE NEWS: Rosemary's Baby

Rosemarysbaby Yep, it's another completely unnecessary remake of a classic!

Rosemary's Baby, Roman Polanski's chilling horror, is being remade by Platinum Dunes. Based on Ira Levine's 1967 novel, the original film starred the wonderful Mia Farrow. She played the pregnant woman who is disturbed by the increasingly strange behaviour of her husband and neighbours, and who begins to wonder what she is going to give birth to...

I have enjoyed some remakes (The Thomas Crown Affair springs to mind), but I can't help feeling they are rather pointless... What do you think?

(Shopaholic) MOVIE NEWS: Hugh Dancy *is* Luke!

It's still not listed on IMDb, but the most recent newsletter from Sophie Kinsella seems to confirm it:

... the Shopaholic movie is finally underway! I have been in New York recently, attending rehearsals, talking to the actors, director and producers, and seeing the story come alive before my eyes... and it's given me goosebumps :) Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy and Krysten Ritter are going to be SO fabulous as Becky, Luke and Suze.

Surely Sophie knows who's playing Luke?

MOVIE NEWS: Suburban Girl... again

SuburbangirlDid any of you watch the recent David Duchovny series, Californication? Duchovny played an author whose best-selling novel, God Hates Us All, is turned into a romantic comedy starring Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, with the title changed to Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

I was reminded of it when I saw this cover for Suburban Girl, which, you may remember is based on Melissa Bank's best-selling novel, A Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing.

Suburban Girl has gone straight to DVD, with the tagline "rewriting her dream in the big city" (I just can't *think* what they're trying to cash in on there!).

Nickandnorah Yes, I loved Rachel Cohn's Gingerbread and I'm intrigued by the sound of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, which she wrote with David Levithan, but I'm mostly interested in the forthcoming movie because it stars Michael Cera, who I lurve.

You know, he was George-Michael in the (sublime) Arrested Development, Paulie Bleeker in the (fabulous) Juno, and Evan in the (hit and miss) Superbad? Well, he's playing Nick and Norah will be played by Kat Dennings (who I don't know).

MOVIE MAGIC: The Yiddish Policeman's Union

Michael Chabon (The Wonder Boys) and the Coen brothers in the same sentence? Yep, it's my dream come true. Well, one of my dreams. There's the one with Clooney and Depp and Cusack, but we'll gloss over that...

The Coen brothers are going to adapt Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union. It's a tale set in an alternate-reality Alaska, with an alcoholic cop investigating the death of a heroin-addicted chess prodigy who may or may not be the Messiah. Can't wait.

Writers go back to work

Yay! An agreement has been reached and the 100-day Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is officially over. A back-to-work order was approved by 92.5% of the WGA members.

The Oscars ceremony can now go ahead as planned, TV shows such as House and CSI will be back in production, and, most importantly, writers get a fairer payment deal for their work.

TV & MOVIE NEWS: I Was a Teenage Popsicle

PopsicleBev Katz Rosenbaum has announced that her young adult book,  I Was a Teenage Popsicle, has been optioned for film and TV. (The plan is to produce it as a film then spin it into a series.)

For any writers reading (and I know there are lots of you), this came about as the result of Bev sending a copy of her book to the production company after watching one of their shows and realizing the tone was similar to her book!

Bev's advice is to take note of which shows and indie movies are similar to your books and send the producers (you can almost always find the production companies' websites on the net) a copy of your book along with any endorsements/reviews (good ones would probably be best...).

Great advice and good luck, Bev!

Vanity Fair has cancelled its famous after-show Oscars party in support of the Writers Guild of America strike.

This latest blow comes just as hopes are raised for an agreement between the WGA and the Hollywood film studios. The word on the net is that a deal is taking shape to end the three-month-long strike and that meetings are being set up for this Saturday.

Adopt A Writer

No. Not literally. Supporters of the Writers Guild of America strike have come up with a genius idea. They have pulled together writers who blog to create the Adopt A Writer website. Featuring working writers, it aims to give an insight into writer's lives, finances and experiences of the strike.

Writing is such a misunderstood profession. People either picture the super-rich and successful or someone living penniless in a garret. Hopefully, Adopt A Writer will give a more balanced, infomed view, as well as rallying support for the strike.

MOVIE NEWS: Sex and the City poster

SexandthecitymovieposterI'm only mildly excited about the Sex and the City movie. I loved the show, but I'm not convinced that returning to it won't be a mistake. Still I'll be happy just to have a bit more Mr Big in my life...

What I am excited about, though, is this gorgeous poster. I can't stop looking at it. I know I need to buy it for my office wall. But at the same time, there are a few things missing. It needs a New York skyline (even a small one, across the bottom, would do).

[poster via Just Jared]

Also, a picture of Carrie and a tagline of "Get Carried Away"? Sex and the City was never just about Carrie. It makes me wonder if part of Sarah Jessica Parker's agreement to get on board was based on it being All About Her. I don't mind if Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda are in the background a tad, but they should definitely be there, don't you think?

MOVIE NEWS: More Shopaholic casting news

Hughdancy Krysten_ritter You probably all know by now that Isla Fisher is playing Becky Bloomwood in the Shopaholic movie (now in pre-production), but I've just checked on IMDb and found out who's on board for Luke and Suze. And I'm not happy.

Luke will be played by Hugh Dancy (The Jane Austen Book Club). I haven't seen him in anything, but judging by the photos he's a tad less masculine than I imagined Luke to be. (But I can't see Luke as anyone other than Colin Firth, so it might just be me.)

Krysten Ritter will play Suze.  If you're a Gilmore Girls fan, then you'll know Krysten as Rory's really annoying Yale friend. I don't know who I'd cast as Suze, but I don't think it would be her.

What do you think?

I was very excited to read that Toby Young's hilarious How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is being made into a film.

The film also stars Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson, and is scheduled for an October release.

MOVIE NEWS: I Think She's Got It by Bridie Clark

Because She Can author Bridie Clark has already sold the movie rights to her next, as yet unpublished book, I Think She's Got It. In fact, the Weinstein Company has bought book, movie and television rights!

According to BuzzSugar, the story is a modern-day Pygmalion, set in Manhattan and focusing on "a shy Midwesterner who is transformed into a sophisticated socialite by a man-about-town who insists he can turn anyone into the latest 'it' girl."

A great idea, but, as BuzzSugar points out, the title references My Fair Lady, which was itself a retelling of Pygmalion. Just shows that a good story can run and run...

MOVIE NEWS: More My Sister's Keeper cast news

First there was Cameron Diaz (which I thought was ridiculous). Then there were the Fanning sisters (which Sarah wasn't too sure about). And now I read that Alec Baldwin has signed on to play the lawyer, Campbell, in the forthcoming adaptation of Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper.

He's much older than the character (who's in his thirties), plus recent revelations about his private life have put me right off Mr Baldwin, but what do you think? Is this shaping up to be an incredible film? Or (like me) do you think the casting director's having a laugh?

More WGA Strike news

We told you about the Writers Guild of America strike six weeks ago, when it began. Negotiations were halted on 7 December when the producers' alliance refused to bargain further unless the union dropped six proposals. Today, things have taken a turn for the worse.

The WGA has filed an unfair labour practices complaint, claiming studios broke the law by ending negotiations.

The WGA is demanding (not unreasonably some may say) that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers returns to the bargaining table to, you know, talk this thing through and reach an agreement.

The TV/movie the rights have been optioned by Fox, which is part of 20th Century Fox. If they go ahead with the project, Phillipa says, it seems most likely it is going to be a TV movie. A writer/producer has been assigned, but no casting news as yet.

Thedivingbellandthebutterfly_gallerOkay, nobody laugh, but I only just realised that a film had been made of The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

Anyhoo, it's out at the end of November.

Bauby's memoir was written after he suffered a massive stroke, aged 42, which left him with 'locked-in syndrome'. His only method of communication was through blinking his left eyelid, but he managed to dictate this book.

Anyone else think it will be very difficult to do justice to this incredible story?

MOVIE NEWS: Angels & Demons

Let me tell you a little story. Once upon a time I worked at Waterstone's bookstore and customers would sometimes ask for recommendations. Whenever they asked us to recommend a crime novel, we always told them to read Angels & Demons by a little-known author named Dan Brown.

We booksellers would often wonder why Dan Brown wasn't more famous since Angels & Demons was such a flat-out fabulous book. And then along came The Da Vinci Code... and we all lived happily ever after (or at least, Dan Brown did).

Anyway. My point is that I didn't like The Da Vinci Code book and so haven't watched the movie, but I was excited to hear that a movie is being made of Angels & Demons. Except that it's become the first movie casualty of the Hollywood writers' strike; it's had to be delayed because the script needs more work and there are no writers around to do it. Shame. Here at Trashionista, we were traumatised to hear that the so-wrong-it's-not-funny Cameron Diaz had been cast as the mother, Sara, in the film of Jodi Picoult's bestselling My Sister's Keeper.

However, I just read (on Jodi's website) that real-life sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning have been cast as Kate and Anna Fitzgerald.

Screenwriters on strike!

Meg Cabot and Neil Gaiman are among those who have laid down their pens this week for the Writers Guild of America strike.

The action only affects screenwriting and concerns the residual payment made to writers for internet distribution and the sale of DVDs. Knowing how much money the television and film industry makes and how little most writers get paid, I can't see a problem. Can you?

FYI, the last time Hollywood writers went on strike was in 1988. It lasted for 22 weeks and cost the industry $500 million.

Georgiagroome We've written about this before, but I've just seen some casting news and I'm very excited. Georgia herself is to be played by an actress named Georgia Groome, who I don't know, but in this picture looks exactly - exactly - as I imagined the character of Georgia Nicolson!

Georgia's dad is being played by Alan Davies (love him) and her mum by comedian Karen Taylor. You might not know Karen Taylor, but I recently enjoyed her sketch show, Touch Me, I'm Karen Taylor, and I think she'll be perfect too. With a great cast and Bend It Like Beckham's Gurinder Chadha directing (and she's written the screenplay), this one's going to be big.

Maria Bello has never finished a Jane Austen book

Mariabello1 Turns out Maria Bello - one of the stars of the movie adaptation of The Jane Austen Book Club - is no fan of Jane Austen. Saying, on Babble.com

I'll be brutally honest and say I'm a huge reader — I read about two novels a week, I've been reading since I was five — and I've never gotten through a Jane Austen book. It's just not my type of writing. I sort of like more testosterone-driven, hard-hitting novels like Hemingway or Philip Roth or Simone de Beauvoir. I sort of like things that go right for the gut. Maybe I'll grow into liking Jane Austen, but right now, eh.

Keira Knightley 'too pretty' for Atonement?

Ceri Radford of The Telegraph's books blog can't decide if she's looking forward to the adaptation of Ian McEwan's World War Two-set modern classic Atonement or not. On the one hand, she loves a period drama, on the other hand... there's Keira Knightley. That alone would put me off (me-ow!) but Radford's specific problem is that the pouty one is "too pretty"  for Cecilia, who is described in the book as "plain".

Does it matter that actresses look like the characters they're playing, or is a little artistic licence understandable - we are talking about Hollywood after all!

What do you think?

MOVIE NEWS: Shopaholic!

Is it really true? Well, yes, apparently it is. According to Coming Soon:

P.J. Hogan (Peter Pan, My Best Friend's Wedding) will direct Confessions of a Shopaholic, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Sophie Kinsella. Jerry Bruckheimer will produce.

Shooting begins this November in New York. [via BuzzSugar]

I know we've asked you this before, but who do you see as Becky? (I can definitely see Rachel Bilson, but also, of course, Reese Witherspoon.)

MOVIE NEWS: The Jane Austen Book Club trailer

We wrote about the upcoming film of The Jane Austen Book Club back in April and now we have the trailer to show you. I didn't love the book, but the film definitely has a good cast (love Maria Bello) and I liked the trailer (gave me the shivers), but we'll have to wait until January next year to see if it's as good as it looks.

MOVIE NEWS: Dogs of Babel/Lorelei's Secret

I loved Carolyn Pankhurst's novel Lorelei's Secret (called Dogs of Babel in the US) and I've heard (via Huffington Post) that it's being made into a movie with Will Ferrell.

The book is about a man who, following his wife's death to which their dog, Lorelei, was the only witness, tries to teach Lorelei to talk. Ferrell, who showed he has an excellent grasp of both the absurd and, um, acting, in Stranger Than Fiction, could be perfect, but we'll have to wait until 2009 to find out.

MOVIE NEWS: Yes Man

We wrote a while ago about how the movie rights to both of Danny Wallace's hilarious books - Yes Man and Join Me - had been snapped up and, at the time, we'd heard that Jack Black was to star in the first.

Well, we were wrong (not our fault - we got it from Danny's website!). Turns out Yes Man is now to star Jim Carrey. But don't get too excited (assuming you're excited at all), it's not due out until 2009.

MOVIE NEWS: The Lovely Bones

Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones is one of the most successful books of recent years (and also top of a list of books you shouldn't bother to read) and now the inevitable movie details have been announced.

Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) has co-written the screenplay and will direct and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) is in negotiations to play killer George Harvey.

Susie Salmon will be played by Saoirse Ronan and Ryan Gosling and Rachel Weisz will play her parents.

MOVIE NEWS: The Nanny Diaries trailer

The Nanny Diaries is probably the most eagerly awaited chick lit adaptation since Bridget Jones's Diary.

The trailer states coming this spring, but I've checked on IMDb and they have a date of 7 September, which doesn't bode all that well. What does bode well is that Laura Linney's in it. I love Laura Linney. Anyway, let us know what you think.

MOVIE NEWS: Evening

I must admit I hadn't heard of the book Evening by Susan Minot before I saw adverts for the film. But the ads definitely caught my eye: this new adaptation of Minot's book stars Claire Danes, Toni Colette, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, among others! According to the film's website, it's about a mother-daughter relationship... which I'm guessing doesn't always go smoothly (or else why make a film about it?!)

No news on a UK release date yet but we'll keep you posted.

YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY

Satc_group_Last week, the film and literary worlds were all-a-flutter with the news that Sex and the City is to be made into a movie - after years and years of rumours and speculation it is (apparently) really going to happen. I guess Kim Cattrall decided to just grit her teeth and make nice with SJP... or something. (I'm just speculating, that's not libel!) Anyhoo, what I want to know this week is whether you think it's a good idea.

Should a good thing be left well enough alone? Or are you chomping at the bit to find out what happened next for Carrie and co.? Do TV series ever make good films - if not, will this be the exception? And if you are keen on the idea, what should happen next? (Hey, you never know who might be reading!)

In other words: SATC - the movie: is it a Yay or a Nay, and why?

Yay or Nay archives.

[Don't forget it's Yay or Nay day at Hippyshopper, Bridalwave, Dollymix, Corrie Blog, Catwalk Queen, Kiss and Makeup, The Bag Lady, Shoewawa and Shiny Shiny, too!]

Woo! And indeed hoo!

According to IMDb, the long-awaited Sex and the City TV movie will start shooting this autumn.

All four of the original women have signed up: Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis and the film will be directed by the show's longtime director Michael Patrick King, based on a new script he's written.

MOVIE NEWS: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

Following my review of this wonderful book earlier today, Phillipa left a comment asking if rumours of a film are true. And they are!

Due for release next year, the screenplay has been written by David Magee who wrote Finding Neverland and Simon Beaufoy who wrote The Full Monty, so it's in pretty safe hands!

Carry on over the cut for the - possibly controversial - casting news.

Dunebug's Amy Adams is to play Miss LaFosse and Frances 'Fargo' McDormand is Miss Pettigrew.

Yep, they're both American and I'm not sure how I feel about that. They're both great actresses, but still, weren't there any British actresses available? Or doesn't it matter?

(There are some British cast-members, including Stephanie Cole, Ciaran Hinds and Shirley Henderson.)

Knocked Up author sues Knocked up director

KnockedupbookKnockedupfinalposter_2 Canadian author Rebecca Eckler is suing Universal Pictures and director Judd Apatow alleging that the story for the hit movie "Knocked Up" was taken directly from her non-fiction book of the same name.

Apart from the title, Eckler claims the book and movie's similarities include the fact that the Katherine Heigl character is an up-and-coming television reporter, and the main character in Eckler's book is an up-and-coming newspaper reporter. She also says that the movie and book have a secondary female character in common (to whom both main characters go to for advice) and that both of the secondary characters have screaming children.

I haven't read the book or seen the film (though I've heard better things about the film than the book). If anyone's familiar with both, let us know what you think.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Joanna Barrett

JoannabarrettJoanna Barrett's The Men's Guide To The Women's Bathroom is a great read, out now in the US and in the UK with Little Black Dress. A witty romp through ladies' bathroom secrets, it has generated a huge amount of buzz, and will be made into a movie by Hugh Jackman's production team. So without further ado, here's what Joanna had to say when we grabbed her for a chat...

Please describe your latest book in 15 words or fewer:

The Men’s Guide to the Women’s Bathroom reveals the secrets behind the door marked “Women.”

Where do you like to write your books (in bed, a coffee shop, an office)?

I write everywhere!  In fact, I’m answering these questions right now in the waiting room of my dentist’s office!  (Hey, if he’s going to make me wait, I may as well get some work done!) I think Tolstoy wrote War and Peace while waiting for the dentist.

While in the midst of a novel, I sit in front of my computer in a bathrobe.  I often do not shower nor wash my hair.  I eat takeout and stare into the refrigerator abyss for something sweet.  I tend to ignore the phone and any semblance of a social life.  It’s a lonely time.  When I finish, I like to hear the hum of the printer as it prints out all those pages.  Such a comforting feeling, indeed.  P.S.  Is this too much information? [Not at all! I know the feeling... - Diane]

Your favourite chick-lit book?

Pride and Prejudice, of course!

Your favourite female heroine (if different from above!), and why?

I like writing about women with moxie. I loved former Texas Governor Ann Richards. She was a larger than life character. She’s probably the only person in the world who could get away with telling George W. Bush that he was “Born with a silver foot in his mouth.”

What tips would you give to any of our readers who want to become writers?

It helps to heed the old adage “Write what you know.” Why waste time inventing a story when your story is right in front of you? Of course, the most important part of writing is to put it down on paper. It’s only an idea until it becomes words on a page! I think the best book on the subject is On Writing, by Stephen King. [I do too - Diane]

What are you reading at the moment?

I try to read a book per week. This keeps words flowing through my head in order to make my own writing better. One of my favorite books is A Widow for One Year, by John Irving.

What are you working on now? (If you can give us a hint!)

My second novel [Killing Carlton] is due out on Valentines Day, 2008. Its heroine, Madeline Piatro, is in a relationship with a beautiful and yet very bad man. When this man breaks her heart and steals her business idea, she hires a loveable mob hit man to get revenge. And what woman doesn’t secretly yearn to do this!

What question have you never been asked in an interview, but think you should have been? (Tell us the question and answer it too, if you like!)

(I’ve never been asked this question!) That is…I’ve never been asked the question of what I’ve never been asked. Ha! Get it!

Actually, I wish someone would ask me whether I collect real-life stories to use in my novels. I have a good answer for this: yes! While writing The Men’s Guide to the Women’s Bathroom, I used some phenomenal quotes I overheard in women’s bathrooms. Please email me at jobarrett@jobarrettbooks.com if you have a fantastic bathroom story of your own!

And check out Joanna's website at jobarrettbooks.com. Thanks Joanna!

Amightyheart_2Based on the Marianne Pearl's memoir about her husband Daniel's abduction and murder by Pakistani militants in 2002 (while she was pregnant with their first child), A Mighty Heart is sure to be a heartbreaking adaptation. Angelina Jolie stars along with (weirdly) two of the former cast of Judging Amy: Jillian Armenante co-stars and and Dan Futterman (who also co-wrote the Oscar-nominated biopic Capote) plays Daniel.

It will be released in the UK on 28 September.

MOVIE NEWS: The Jane Austen Book Club

KarenjoyfowlerI seem to be the only Trashionista writer who loved The Jane Austen Book Club , but obviously people somewhere agree with me, as Hollywood quickly snapped up the rights for a big screen version of the novel.

Emily Blunt, who played the English first assistant (based on Plum Sykes?) in The Devil Wears Prada, stars, along with Amy Brenneman from (one of my faves) Judging Amy. Hugh Dancy, who will also star in Bronte (it's in 'pre-production' now) is in it too - but there's no news on a release date yet.

MOVIE NEWS: Sammy's Hill by Kristin Gore

Kristin Gore's debut novel, Sammy's Hill, is to be turned into a movie. Controversial director David O. Russell (Three Kings and I (Heart) Huckabees) is adapting and will direct.

Kristin is the daughter of former vice president turned environmental evangelist Al Gore and Sammy's Hill centres on a young woman who tries to balance a job as a congressional aide on Capitol Hill while trying to find a man. I started reading it when it came out (during a painful bout of West Wing-withdrawal) but only got as far as (*checks book*) page 29 before losing interest. Following this news, I'll move it up my queue for another go.

And, yes, my book cover obsession continues. One of the things that attracted me to Sammy's Hill was this cover:

Sammysgood
Cute, eyecatching, funny, right?

But I just spotted this later cover:

Sammysbad
Boring, generic and it looks very eighties to me. At least they kept the fishbowl, even though you'd barely notice it. How disappointing.

What do you think?

SPOTLIGHT: Louise Rennison

RennisonlouiseI have to admit to being a little bit obsessed with Louise Rennison. I think it might be because, as I've already mentioned, I originally thought she was a "real" teenager, so once I thought of spotlighting her this week, I couldn't think of anyone else.

Plus there's the news that the team behind Bend It Like Beckham and Bride & Prejudice - Gurinda Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges - are making a film of Angus, Thongs & Full-Frontal Snogging. Currently in pre-production, it's due for release next year. No casting news yet, sadly.

Anyway, Louise! Louise grew up in Leeds, Yorkshire in a three bedroom house shared with her parents, grandparents, and an aunt, uncle and cousin! When Louise was 15, the family (presumably not all of the above) emigrated to Wairakei in New Zealand.

Back in the UK and after some travelling and an assortment of jobs including playleader and dental nurse, Louise enrolled on a Performing Arts course in Brighton.

She then wrote and performed an enormously successful one-woman show called Stevie Wonder Touched My Face, which led to Louise writing for the Evening Standard. After writing an article called Dating Over 35, she got a call from Piccadilly Press suggesting she write a book. In fact, they suggested a teenage girl’s diary.

The first book, Angus, Thongs and Full-frontal Snogging, was a huge hit and Louise has gone on to write six more (with more to come). The books have been even bigger in the US than the UK, selling over a million copies and reaching Number 1 on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Louise lives in Brighton.

Carry on over the cut for Louise's bibliography.

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging
It's OK, I'm Wearing Really Big Knickers (Called On the Bright Side, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God in the US)
Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas
Dancing in My Nuddy Pants
... And that's when it fell off in my hand (Called Away Laughing on a Fast Camel in the US because the UK title was thought to be too rude; even though the "it" wasn't the "it" you're probably thinking of!)
... And then he ate my boy entrancers
... Startled by his furry shorts!

Kate Winslet to play La Petite Anglaise?

Catherine Sanderson - who was sacked over her blog, La Petite Anglaise - not only has a six-figure two book deal, but is also in discussions for a film version.

The first book, based on how she met "Mr Frog", her former French partner and the father of "Tadpole", her four-year-old daughter, is due to be published early next year and Sanderson would like Kate Winslet to play her if there is a movie.

Interestingly for bloggers, in a case to be heard next month Sanderson is claiming £50,000 from her former employers for wrongful dismissal. It will be the first in France to decide if an employee can be dismissed for alleged comments on a blog. [via Book 2 Book]

MOVIE NEWS: Bronte

If you're still unsure about Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen, how do you feel about Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek's Jen) as Charlotte Bronte?

Bronte the movie is due to begin filming this year and, along with Michelle Williams, stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers (from Bend it Like Beckham) as Bronte brother Branwell, Nathalie Press as Emily Bronte and Emily Barclay as Anne Bronte.

Funnily enough, the entire cast listed on IMDb is British, apart from Ms Williams.

Actually, I think the word she used was "bajoongas"...

Bookslut is scathing of  the choice of Mendes for the upcoming* film adapatation of  graphic novel Ghost Rider. Especially as the gorgeous star recently admitted she'd put on weight for the film specifically to enhance her chest size:

"The original Roxanne was blonde and blue-eyed, but also had huge bajoongas... I figured since I can't be blonde and blue-eyed, I'll at least have her bra size. So the bajoongas got big. They were out of control!"

Don't say we don't bring you the need-to-know news, people!

*February in the US, March in the UK.

YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY

Bj_2Back on Monday, I told you that Anne Hathaway will play Jane Austen in an upcoming film about the classic author's young life called Becoming Jane.

So we now have Americans portraying Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter and ultimate chick-lit heroine Bridget Jones.

But should they? Is it necessary in order to pull in crowds at the box office? Does it matter, as long as the accent - I mean performance - is good? Or should we be giving British actresses more of a chance? (And if you're American, what do you think?)

Americans playing classic English heroines - tell us, is it a Yay or a Nay, and why?

[Don't forget it's Yay or Nay day at Hippyshopper, Bridalwave, Corrie Blog, Catwalk Queen, Kiss and Makeup, The Bag Lady, Shoewawa and Shiny Shiny, too!]

MOVIE NEWS: The Time Traveler's Wife

What have directors Steven Spielberg, David Fincher and Gus Van Sant got in common? They’ve all considered - and rejected - the film version of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel The Time Traveler’s Wife. German director Robert Schwentke (who directed Jodie Foster’s Flightplan) is now apparently on board. [via Reuters]

Mean Girls’ Rachel McAdams is in negotiation to star as Clare. Still no sign of a male lead. Any ideas?

Meryl Streep wins Golden Globe for 'Prada' portrayal

Meryl Streep's star turn as boss-from-hell Miranda Priestly in hit chick-lit film adaptation The Devil Wears Prada has earned her a Golden Globe award for best actress in a comedy film, reports the BBC.

Most deserved, I must say - good on ya, Mezza!

Graphic novel film adaptations - the big earners and what we want to see next

We've talked before about the resurgence in popularity of comic books/graphic novels, with Jodi Picoult revamping Wonder Woman, Manga Romance and even a new graphic novel version of Wuthering Heights.

Plus there's Jennifer Crusie erm, writing about Wonder Woman underwear...

Here's a list of the most successful comic book film adaptations from 1978-present day. As you might suspect, women don't feature hugely, but maybe a new rumoured Wonder Woman movie starring Lorelei Gilmore (okay, Lauren Graham) could help change that...?

I'm also desperate for the film of Cancer Vixen to become a reality...

MOVIE NEWS: Special Topics in Calamity Physics

CalamityMarisha Pessl's hugely successful and hugely hyped debut novel (nothing to do with the author's looks ... probably) has been optioned by no less than Miramax Films (and producer Scott Rudin). David Hare, who adapted Michael Cunningham's The Hours, is writing the screenplay.

No clues as to casting yet, but since the main character is a teenage girl, I'm thinking Lindsay Lohan or Keira Knightley, as usual. [via Galleycat]

MOVIE NEWS: Becoming Jane

A new film, Becoming Jane is about a twenty-year old Jane Austen and her romance with a young Irishman, and how he influenced her in the creation of the male characters in Pride and Prejudice. It stars James McAvoy, Dame Maggie Smith, Julie Walters and - gasp! - an American as Jane: Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway.

It should hit British screens on March 9th and I can. not. wait. to see it!

MOVIE NEWS: Round up: Miss Potter, Motherless Brooklyn, Perfume... and more!

There are a LOT of books-turned-films out now or coming up this year! First, Miss Potter, Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger's portrayal of iconic British children's author Beatrix Potter (which reunites her with Ewan McGregor) is out in UK cinemas as I write. As is Perfume, out later than expected, but getting some good reviews.

And there's exciting news for fans of Jonathan Lethem's hit novel about a detective with Tourette's, Motherless Brooklyn (Keris), which I haven't read yet, but hear only good things about. (Plus it won the prestigious American National Book Critics Award for Fiction). A screenplay is currently "in production", lined up to be written, directed by and starring the fantastically talented Edward Norton, so it should be a quality film, fingers crossed...

PLUS, Dakota Fanning, who has to be the hardest-working twelve-year old in the world, is about to star in a film of kid's classic Charlotte's Web, along with the voices of Julia Roberts, Steve Buscemi and Oprah Winfrey! There's also Freedom Writers, starring Hilary Swank and sounding remarkably like Dangerous Minds, but based on this book.

I'm sure there are more on the way, but that's enough for now!

Johnny Depp buys books

Johnny Depp is the latest Hollywood big cheese to snap up a few books to turn into movies.

Inamorata by Joseph Gangemi, Affected Provincial's Companion by Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy (not his real name, I imagine) and James Meek’s The People's Act of Love have all been bought by Depp’s production company, but the lovely Johnny is so far not attached to star in any of them (though at least two sound very Depp-ish). MOVIE NEWS: The Innocent Man

George_clooneyGeorge Clooney has bought the screen rights to John Grisham's recent non-fiction book "The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town."

"The Innocent Man" is the true story of a gross miscarriage of justice that sent Ron Williamson to Oklahoma's death row for 11 years for a murder he did not commit. Clooney will produce the movie, but there’s no news yet on whether he’ll also star and/or direct.

With this purchase, Clooney has sealed himself a place on Trashionista’s list of literature-loving stars, which includes Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst and Scarlett Johanssen. Previously, Clooney’s appeared in The Good German by Joseph Kanon, The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger, Out of Sight by Elmore Leonard and The Thin Red Line by James Jones.

But if you think bringing you this news wasn’t at least partially motivated by the urge to look at a pic of George Clooney looking handsome, you’re kidding yourself.

MOVIE NEWS: Fur

Fur_1Fur, an upcoming film starring Nicole Kidman, sounds like a bit of an odd one... Kidman plays real-life photographer Diane Arbus, who was known for her weird and shocking boundary-pushing photographs. The film is based on Patricia Bosworth's book Diane Arbus: a biography, but the film has added some fictional elements so is subtitled An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. Fur also stars Robert Downey Junior and is either going to be very very weird, or weirdly compelling- here's when I say "find out from..." but I couldn't get any info on a release date, so I'm guessing next year. MOVIE NEWS: Stranger Than Fiction

Strangerthanfictionposter_1Will Ferrell plays it slightly less for laughs than usual in a new book-related film that's getting some good reviews (and looks great!) Stranger than Fiction is about a man called Harold Crick, who's surprised (as you would be) when a narration suddenly begins in his head- has he become a fictional character? What's going on??  And what's this about his "imminent death"?

Find out from tomorrow, when it's released in the UK. The film also stars Maggie Gyllenhall, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman, and you can watch a trailer here.

Marian Keyes news- she's on Strictly and on film!

MariankeyesAnyone who watched Strictly Come Dancing's sister show It Takes Two yesterday will have seen footage of the lovely Marian Keyes behind the scenes on Saturday's SCD, giving her unique take on the series- inspecting the underwear arrangements inside the girls' dresses (not whilst anyone was wearing them, I hasten to add!) and screaming with such excitement at meeting Lilia - she almost provoked the poor girl to need a restraining order. Then she treated us to a little of her dancing... hmm. All in all, very entertaining. If barmy.

AND! Did you know that there's a film of her novel Last Chance Saloon? If you did, you're more informed than I am! Called ‘Au secours j’ai trente ans’ (which Babelfish translates - I suspect a little too literally - as "With the help I am thirty years old") it's a French film that sadly doesn't have a subtitled version available on English or American Amazon, but you can buy a copy via the French version of the site. A reviewer there only gave it 2/5, but Marian says in Further Under the Duvet that she thinks it's a very good adaptation - and you can't say fairer than that!

BOOK REVIEW: The Nanny Diaries by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin

NannydAs one of the biggest chick-lit books of the last five years, and an upcoming film (starring Scarlett Johanssen, of course) I can't believe we haven't reviewed The Nanny Diaries yet. But I don't mind, I'm more than happy to do the job! I might be a bit biased though- this is one of my favourite chick-lit novels of all time. If you've read the execrable sequel Citizen Girl, don't be put off - The Nanny Diaries is nothing like. Which means it's fresh, fun, fast-paced and highly enjoyable. Nan the Nanny (yes... get over it) is studying for her master's in child education and turns to nannying for rich Manhattan families to pay the bills. Suddenly she has to juggle her studies with the ever-more demanding family she works for whilst also trying to avoid her difficult flatmate (which isn't too hard, as Nan barely has time to eat or sleep anymore!)

Demanding, unreasonable and distant, it's hard to care about Nan's employers, but they do show occasional moments of compassion... VERY occasional! Although a potential love interest enters the story, it's Nan and her little charge Grayer whose relationship is the focal point, and this is told with great love and sweetness. Nan is the only person who really seems to make time for little Grayer, although sadly she has to attempt to undo some of the obnoxious behaviour his parents have inculcated in him. The book really provides a great insight into the emotional issues around caring for children who are not your own. On a lighter note, the book also allows a great deal of "I wonder if someone really did that!" speculating, as Kraus and McLaughlin really were nannies to the rich and famous...

I loved the insight into the rich and snobby New York world of Mr and Mrs X, and I found Nan empathetic, capable and intelligent, even if I was frustrated at times by her lack of assertiveness (but assertive would equal fired in her job, so it's understandable). I raced through this book twice, and now I've been talking about it I'm thinking of reading it a third time- I know I'll enjoy it just as much.

A modern chick-lit classic.

MOVIE NEWS: A Jealous Ghost

Ooh, we haven't had any movie news for about five minutes, have we. A.N. Wilson's supernatural thriller A Jealous Ghost is to be a film starring and produced by Kirsten Dunst. [via The Book Standard]

Like Scarlett Johanssen and Brad Pitt, Dunst seems fond of book adaptations. One of her earliest roles was in The Bonfire of the Vanities (based on the Tom Wolfe book) and her breakout was in Interview with the Vampire (from Anne Rice's series). She has also starred in The Virgin Suicides (Jeffery Eugenides) and Little Women (Louisa May Alcott).

Caprice Crane's second novel Forget About It isn't due until late 2007 but according to the author's (jam-packed) website it's already headed for the big screen... starring Scarlett Johansson. PS: Scarlett likes her book-to-movie adaptations, doesn't she? The Horse Whisperer, Ghost World, Girl With a Pearl Earring, A Good Woman, The Black Dahlia, The Nanny Diaries, The Other Boleyn Girl... she's Hollywood's book-to-movie go-to girl!

P.S. Hilary Swank injured in filming

Back in July we told you that Hilary Swank was to star in the movie version of Cecelia Ahern's P.S. I Love You. Well, filming has already started, but it seems things aren't quite going to plan.

While filming a striptease scene, Swank needed stitches in her forehead after she "became snagged on co-star Gerald Butler's suspenders". Suspenders is American for braces. I hope. If not, this film is sounding very different to the book ...

The film also stars Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates and Gina Gershon and is due for release in 2008. [via Playfuls]

MOVIE NEWS: Little Children

Littlechildren_1I absolutely loved Tom Perrotta's Little Children. I found it interesting, or rather irritating, that it examined a lot of the same issues as Jennifer Weiner's Goodnight Nobody, but while that book was dismissed as chick lit, Little Children was lauded as literature. Funny that. (Yep, I'm on my hobby horse again!)

Anyway, the film's out soon, stars Kate Winslet, and looks great.

All new Eloise stories

Fans of Kay Thompson's charming Eloise books about a six-year-old girl who lives in New York's Plaza Hotel will be excited to hear about a new animated Disney television series based on the characters.

Featuring Mary Matilyn Mouser (how great is that name?) as the voice of Eloise and Lynn Redgrave as the Nanny, 13 half-hour episodes will be shown on both the Family Channel in Canada and the Disney Channel in the United States next year (presumably they'll turn up on the Disney Channel in the UK too).

The first story in the series, Me, Eloise, is already available on DVD.

FRIDAY FLICK: The Devil Wears Prada

Devilwearsmovie_1_1We had to review DWP for Friday Flick, didn't we? After all, we've talked about it for quite some time- and even told you how to make Devil Wears Prada cocktails! (I didn't end up sneaking a flask in with me, but I did go to see it with four other girls and a large tub of popcorn, which seems the ideal scenario).

If you haven't read the book and have managed to avoid hearing about the film (how?!) here's the story: Andi wants to be a serious journalist and has moved to New York to pursue her dream. After trying to get her dream job on a big New York newspaper investigating serious issues, and repeatedly failing, in desperation she attends an interview at Runway magazine (famously based on American Vogue) where despite her lack of fashion acumen, editor-in-chief Miranda Priestley (famously based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour) hires her. And then the fun begins!

Sorry- that was sarcasm... the fun doesn't really begin at all for Andi after that. Miranda makes Margaret Thatcher seem warm and fuzzy: Andi is constantly on call to pander to her every whim, from getting the new Harry Potter in manuscript form to getting her out of Florida in the middle of a tropical storm. And Miranda's senior assistant Emily has no sympathy, and never responds to Andi's attempts at friendliness. Soon Andi's relationship with her boyfriend Nate is suffering and her friends complain they hardly see her. Her dad comes to visit her and she spends the whole night on the phone, instead. Andi says she can't stand her job. But a part of her is sucked in, too: she changes her image, loses weight and starts to fit in to this glam new world. But does she want to? And what will that mean giving up?

I really enjoyed this film- it's perfect fun chick-lit fare, perfectly placed for its target audience. Anne Hathaway is great at this kind of bumbling-awkward-girl-turned-beauty shtick (as the two Princess Diaries films prove). It's also fun to watch stuff like this and try to imagine what's based on reality (I imagine quite a lot, as the book's author Lauren Weisberger was Anna Wintour's assistant!) There are some differences from the book, though: Andi's boyfriend lives with her in the film, which actually makes more sense, and Miranda is a touch softer (although not much- I'd heard reports that suggested she was positively warm and fuzzy- not so!) The ending is also different, and I feel the book's more moral outcome was stronger. But those who haven't read the book I'm sure won't mind. All in all, a fun girly fun, perfect if you love fashion, journalism- or just a light chick-flick of a Friday night. I recommend it!

MOVIE NEWS: Eat, Pray, Love

Remember how much I loved Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love (you do memorise my reviews, don't you?), well it's being made into a film starring Julia Roberts and produced by Brad Pitt. Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy will adapt the book and direct. Apparently, it's going to be 'a large-scale epic that covers four countries'.

Pitt and Murphy are also working on a film version of Augusten Burroughs' memoir, Running With Scissors.

In fact, looks like Brad's a bit of a bookworm. If you check him out on IMDb, he's also listed to produce The Time Traveler's Wife (possibly with Mean Girls' Rachel McAdams as Clare), The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and A Million Little Pieces (which is apparently being "reconsidered").

The Devil Wears Prada cocktails!

As you should all know by now, this Friday sees the UK release (at long, long last!) of the film adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada so in honour of this fine occasion, one of the film's sponsors, Cointreau, the French liqueur (ooh Cointreau and liqueur are hard to spell, aren't they?- and I haven't taken a sip, I swear!) has created two special cocktails in honour of the film. Perhaps you could have some girlfriends round afterwards for a celebration? Or, y'know, you could try and sneak a flask into the cinema... (JOKE).

Check out the recipes over the cut...

Devil's Desire:

You need: 50ml Cointreau; 25ml pink grapefruit juice; 25ml pomegranate juice; 10ml passion fruit syrup; 1 wedge of lime, squeezed.

Chill a martini glass. Shake ingredients together in a shaker with ice, and strain into glass. Garnish with a spiral of orange peel.

Devil's Delight

Fill a tall glass with ice. Add in this order and stir gently: 1 wedge of lime. Squeeze over ice and drop into glass;

25ml Cointreau;

50ml apple juice ;

50ml cranberry juice.

Garnish with a slice of orange.

Simple! Enjoy...

YAY OR NAY WEDNESDAY

On Monday, I talked about what a great book Out of Sight is, and Keris agreed, but she also said she preferred the film. (Controversial!... but then it does star George Clooney).

So many books, especially our favourite chick-lit ones, are made into movies that we even devote a weekly Trashionista feature to them: Friday Flick.

But I want to know how you feel about film adaptations. The upcoming release (next Friday, 5th October, with selected previews this weekend) of the hotly-awaited The Devil Wears Prada makes this a timely debate: can the film ever really be as good as the book, or is something always lost in translation?

Tell us: from book to film- is it a Yay or a Nay (if you HAD to choose!) and why? And we want to know what you think the best and worst adaptations are... go on, let rip!

MOVIE NEWS: Atlas Shrugged

Angelina Jolie has apparently signed up for a movie version of Ayn Rand's classic novel, Atlas Shrugged. Apparently Brad (you know, Pitt) is in talks to co-star.

Has anyone read the book? I tried to read The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand's other famous novel, years ago, but gave up, flummoxed, very early on. Comments on IMDb include 'arrogant book written by a miserable woman' and 'second greatest book ever written' so now I am, of course, intrigued ...

SPOTLIGHT: Emily Giffin

Emily2006_1This week's spotlight shines on a new chick lit superstar, Emily Giffin.

Emily was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and got a law degree before moving to New York where she worked in litigation.

After moving to London just after 11 September 2001, Emily gave herself six months to make a go of writing.  Within a year she'd not only found an agent and signed a two-book publishing deal, she'd also got married.

A return to the US was followed by the birth of identical twin sons, Edward and George, and her first book Something Borrowed was followed by Something Blue (featuring the same characters, but from a different perspective).

The recent release of her third novel Baby Proof has confirmed Emily's popularity.

The movie rights to Something Borrowed have been sold (to both Drew Barrymore's and Reese Witherspoon's production companies) and Emily apparently wants Patrick Dempsey to play Dex (I'm totally on board with this suggestion!).

Did you know? Emily was student manager of a basketball team whose members included actor Marc Blucas who played Riley in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Continue over the cut for Emily's bibliography (but don't forget to read our interview with Emily).

MOVIE NEWS: Flicka

One of my favourite novels growing up was My Friend Flicka by Mary O'Hara (it's possibly the book that inspired my friendship with an imaginary horse, but let's not go into that now) so you can imagine I was pretty excited to see it's been made into a movie called, simply, Flicka.

It stars Alison Lohman and country singer Tim McGraw and comes out in the UK on the 13th October (it was released in the US in July) so I'd better start polishing my invisible saddle ...

MOVIE NEWS: Starter for Ten

Starter_for_10David Nicholls's very funny debut novel, Starter for Ten has been made into a movie starring Shameless's James McAvoy and comic actress Catherine Tate.

Starter for Ten was one of those books I started reading expecting to love it, but found myself slightly disappointed, but if it can make Jeremy Paxman laugh, there must be something to it! The screenplay has been adapted by David Nicholls himself (well, he is pretty experienced, having written Cold Feet and all!).

Looks like it might be out at the end of October anyway.

Keira Knightley as Jordan?

Apparently if her life story Being Jordan is ever made into a film, Jordan would like Keira Knightley to play her. [via Socialite Life]

Sounds great. I'd like to suggest Leonardo diCaprio as Gareth Gates, Chris Rock as Dwight Yorke and The Rock as Peter Andre!

Now you see, I was joking to begin with, but now I really want to see it.

See what we thought of Angel, Jordan's first foray into fiction.

MOVIE NEWS: Perfume

PerfumePerfume by Patrick Süskind was a huge bestseller in 1989 (and is Martine McCutcheon's favourite book, as she's said in more than one interview!) but as The Guardian reports, it was always considered unfilmable until now, as it's about a detective with an extraordinarily sensitive sense of smell- something that's not that easy to portray on film!

Getting the rights to the film from the reluctant author had also been a problem... Uber-directors Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick (before his death, I assume) were both lined up to direct at different times, and pulled out- but now it's finally been filmed in its native Germany starring Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman, and was released a few days ago in Germany to a mixed critical response. See it in the UK from September 14th.

MOVIE NEWS: The Guy Not Taken

Diane loved Jennifer Weiner's new short story collection, The Guy Not Taken and now I hear Dreamworks have snapped up the film rights to the title story.

More news as and when we hear it (I know you'd expect nothing less!).

MOVIE NEWS: The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing

Around the turn of the millennium the hot book to be seen with was The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank (it wasn't really about hunting or fishing, but about a young woman called Jane and her lives and loves told in a series of collected stories).  Francis Ford Coppola bought the Rules-parody title story and sold it to Reese Witherspoon's film company as a vehicle for the Legally Blonde star. Then...nothing.

Now, finally! Sarah Michelle Gellar is starring in a new version of the film, with the main character's name changed (to Brett- Brett?!) and by the sound of things, very loosely based on the original.  Marc Klein, who wrote the screenplay, was also responsible for good-natured but sappy Serendipity, so I'm expecting more of the same... which means, of course, that I can't wait!

MOVIE MAGIC: Twenty Times a Lady

Exciting news!  Trashionista fave Karyn Bosnak has revealed on her blog that she's been working hard putting the finishing touches to her screenplay for book Twenty Times a Lady.  It might be a little early for a Movie Magic, but we like to be first with the news on Trashionista, so let's get to picking! (Who knows, maybe Hollywood is reading...)

Love interest Colin is a sexy Irish Colin Farrell-a-like, but can you think of anyone better to play the role?  For Delilah, think a dark-haired Bosnak... and then there's her sister, overbearing mother and eccentric grandpa.  Not to mention all her past lovers!

Ideas?

The Mermaid Chair Movie

Suemonkkidd2Good news for Sue Monk Kidd fans among you.  Her second book, The Mermaid Chair is to be made into a TV movie/mini-series, starring Kim Basinger and Debra Mooney (who plays grandma/army sergeant Edna on Everwood; ITV1, 2pm- watch it for great teen angst!)

Currently in pre-production, The Mermaid Chair tells the story of a married woman who falls in love with a Benedictine monk(!)

MOVIE NEWS: The Other Boleyn Girl

Boleyn_girlPhilippa Gregory's historical novel - which I haven't actually read, but about which I've heard raves from none other than Marian Keyes and my Aunty Barb - is to be turned into a movie starring Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana. It's currently in pre-production with Peter Morgan writing the screenplay and Justin Chadwick directing.

Movie News: Julie and Julia

Julieandjulia Julie and Julia by Julie Powell won the first Blooker prize (for blogs  turned into books) earlier this year.  And deservedly so!  The book chronicles her attempts to cook every recipe in classic American chef Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, within one year. (Hence the book's subtitle: "365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen...")   It's not just a book about cooking, though: it's about ambition, achievement, love, friendship and how to find joy in life, and it's wonderful.

And now, it's being made into a film!  With queen of rom-com Nora Ephron ('When Harry Met Sally', 'You've Got Mail', 'Sleepless in Seattle' etc.) lined up to direct (appropriately, given her love for cooking and a good story), it's a mouth-watering prospect...[from Bookslut].

(It's not active anymore, but you can read the original blog here).

Movie News: P S I Love You

Psilove Double Oscar-winner Hilary Swank is to play the lead in the film of Cecelia Ahern's best-selling novel.

Filming starts this Autumn in New York and Ireland. I'm hoping this means they've made Holly Irish-American and that Swank isn't going to attempt an Irish accent. (She's a great actress, but so's Nicole Kidman; remember Far & Away?)

The screenwriter is Steven Rogers whose previous credits include Kate & Leopold, Stepmom and Hope Floats, so it looks like it could be a bit of a tearjerker.

Devil Wears Prada - Anne Hathaway Interview

Devilwearsmovie_1 Looking forward to the release of the Devil Wears Prada? With the launch set for 27th October (argh!), you won’t have to wait so long for snippets. Movie news site Comingsoon.net recently had a chat with Princess Diaries actress Anne Hathaway – who plays fashion-hopeless graduate Andy Sachs in the adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s bestseller.

Said Anne: ‘I felt connected to the story of a girl who was fresh out of college and really idealistic and how she was going to find a way to live in this world. I just loved her story, and I’ve played so many kind of good characters, characters that make good decisions, selfless decisions – I really liked that she kind of did everything wrong.’

To read the whole interview, click here. Comingsoon.net also offers a selection of trailers, featurettes and clips if you really can’t wait.

Just be sure to stay away from those spoilers!

Movie News: Then She Found Me

I have to say I don't know why Elinor Lipman's books haven't been developed for the big screen before now, but thank goodness Oscar-winning actress Helen Hunt has decided to redress the balance.  According to the Imdb, her adaptation of Lipman's first book Then She Found Me will be going into production later this year, to be released in 2007.  (Hunt will be directing, co-writing and starring - busy!)

Funny, touching and surprising, it's the story of April who, whilst still grieving after the death of her parents, finds herself confronted by a selfish, flamboyant small-time TV presenter 17 years her senior... who claims to be her real mother.   Chaos ensues!

It's a brilliant book, and as Lipman is so skilled at dialogue, the script should be great. Here's hoping it makes the perfect chick-flick!

Pre-order the re-released book here.
